Three Plays by Aristophanes, Jeffrey Henderson trans.

STUDENT LEARNING GOALS: By the end of the semester students will be able to
    1. demonstrate a familiarity with the facts of daily life for women in ancient Greece and Rome, including legal status, political participation, health concerns, family roles, religious involvement, education, and occupations.
    2. differentiate between the status and behaviour of Greek women (mainly of 5th C. Athens) and Roman women of the late Republic and early Imperial periods.
    3. identify the literary and philosophical stereotypes which have been handed down to us by important authors of the Classical world (Homer, Euripides, Aristophanes, Plato etc.)
    4. evaluate the available historical, literary, and archeological source material on women in the ancient world in order to determine what may or may not contribute to an accurate picture of daily life from this remote period of history.
    5. demonstrate an awareness of the similarities as well as differences between women's lives in antiquity and the lives of women in the 21st Century.
