for Schools, Parts 1 and 2
COURSE OBJECTIVE:
In this course we will review the fundamentals of Latin
grammar and syntax. The course is
designed for students who have studied Latin in High School but need to refresh
and solidify their knowledge of the language before taking Latin at the intermediate
level (203 and 204).
STUDENT LEARNING GOALS:
By the end of the course student should have reviewed and demonstrate mastery
of the following:
1. Inflected
endings of nouns, adjectives, and pronouns in all declensions;
2.
All conjugated
verb forms, regular and irregular, in all tenses of the Indicative, Imperative,
and Subjunctive; all participle and
infinitive forms;
3.
Skill in
reading and translating passages of elementary Latin such as those supplied
in the text;
4.
Demonstrated
understanding of the connections between Roman and contemporary American society
as well as a sensitivity to the cultural differences of these respective
social, political, and cultural entities.
REQUIREMENTS:
Tests:
There will be three unit tests given at approximately even
intervals during the semester and announced at least one week in advance.
(35 % of final grade)
Quizzes:
There will be short announced quizzes (5-10 minutes in length) given
as often as twice a week. There will
be no make-up quizzes. If you arrive
late, you may take the quiz but must hand it in with the rest of the class.
If you arrive after the quiz has been handed in, you will not be allowed
to take it. Your three lowest quiz
grades will be dropped. (20% of final
grade)
Class Participation:
You should try to be prepared on a regular basis to volunteer and
translate in class. You will keep
track of the number of lines you translate and given credit accordingly.
(15% of final grade)
Final Exam (cumulative):
30% of final grade

Attendance in this accelerated course is crucial to your success.
If you are going to be absent for more than one class for an extended
illness or family emergency, please send me a message by email to inform
me.
Homework: It
is equally important to complete homework assignments
on time. Homework will not be
collected but will corrected by you with the aid of an answer key. It requires
a measure of maturity to attend to this responsibility as it carries no credit.
Make-up Tests:
Make-up tests will only be given if you notify me
on or before the day of the test by email or phone (334-5729).
Do not call me at home.
