Elemenatry German Web Exercise

Übung: Tourismus und Reiseinformationen

This is a computer lab exercise for beginning German which focuses on tourism and travel in central Europe. Students are asked to complete the assignment outlined below within 50 minutes or less. The exercise is graded as a regular lab assignment. Viel Spaß im Internet!

Student Instructions [Hand-Out]

1. Open a world wide web browser application such as Netscape. Open a link to the following URL address, entitled "Geography" of central Europe: http://www.uncg.edu/~lixlpurc/GIP/german_units/Geography.html

2. Enter a "Bookmark" for this German "Geography" page by pulling down the bookmarks menu, and by clicking on "add bookmark".

3. Scroll down the "Geography" page until you find the headline "Reisen und Tourismus". Find the link for "Dorfhotels" (village hotels) and click on it. The URL for this destination is: http://server.net4you.co.at/dorfhotels/

Answer the following questions:

a. List some of the village names (in German) in which these hotels are located?

4. Use your bookmark to return to the "Geography" page at http://www.uncg.edu/~lixlpurc/GIP/german_units/Geography.html.

5. Scroll down the Geography page, and again find the headline "Reisen und Tourismus". Find the link for "Touristik" and click on it. This will bring you to the page entitled "DINO Touristik" [http://www.tkz.fh-rpl.de/tii/hotel/hotel.html]. Scroll down the page until you hit the link entitled "Billigflüge" (inexpensive flights), and click on it. The new page you will reach is called "Skyways" and has this URL: http://www.skyways.de/it.html

Answer the following questions:

a. How much does it cost for one person to fly round trip from München to New York, leaving München on 20.10. 1995, and returning on 7.11.95? [You must enter the city names, "Abflugdatum" (departure date), "Rückflugdatum" (return date), and "Zahl der Plätze" (number of tickets) to obtain the information.]

b. Where would you want to fly, if you had the time and money? Enter your own ideal itinerary, and find out how much it would cost. Briefly describe the itinerary and the information you obtained on the net.

6. By using your bookmark again, return to the "Geography" page and explore other links which interest you under the headline "Reisen und Tourismus". The URL is: http://www.uncg.edu/~lixlpurc/GIP/german_units/Geography.html.
Write a short German or English report about your findings. What web page(s) did you look at (list the titles)? What did you find there? What seemed interesting, informative, surprising, or perplexing about the information you obtained?
