Introduction to Marine Biology, 4th Ed. Brooks/Cole Cengage. ix+563 pp. 2DHMilne Text. Marine Life and the Sea, Marine Biology web site. Page assignments listed in italics. Both textbooks on Reserve at Jackson Library INFORMATION From Covid-19. Important! Because of COVID-19 related issues, we need to minimize the congestion of students in lobbies, stairways, and hallways. To help with this, please do not enter the Sullivan Science Building until you see that students in the previous time slot have exited the building. I will end class on time and ask that everyone leave the building immediately after lecture. I will work on being available by Zoom for 30 minutes after lecture to answer questions that arise from the lecture. Reminder yet again: Face coverings are mandatory on campus at all times. Any student appearing without a mask (face covering) will asked to leave the lecture to find a mask before being allowed back into the lecture. Social distancing (6 feet) is also mandatory in the classroom. Attendance is mandatory. It is imperative that you: - make every effort to attend class and be on time, - not get behind in your reading and studying, - understand the material on a daily basis, and do not wait to try to "catch up" later, - read the assigned materials in the text both before and after that particular lecture, and - pay particular attention to each lecture since test questions will come from both lecture and text reading in addition to the slides from the course web site. No food may be brought into the lecture room; no smoking in the entire building. Please be in your seat and ready to begin at 3:30 pm each day, and plan to remain for the entire lecture. Alternate test times can be made by appointment in cases where you know in advance that you cannot be present for a normally-scheduled test. No make-up tests will be given for students who have not made arrangements prior to the scheduled test time. Also Documentation is required for a make-up test. The three lecture tests will count equally (22%) and Test IV will count 34% (and will be, in some measure, comprehensive). The exams will be drawn primarily from the lectures. The slides on the course web site are considered to be an integral part of the lectures. The Study Guides are planned to be primarily an overview of the lecture material. The readings in the book are designed to fill in the gaps. Therefore studying for the exams should be primarily from the lectures(+ slides) and study guides. The book should not be ignored but can be considered secondary. The lecture tests will last one hour. Therefore the last 15 minutes on a test day will be devoted to lecture material. Tests will be given on Canvas so the following is irrelevant. Tests must be done in ink, no pencils. No revaluation of test scoring will be done for a test written in pencil. Lecture tests will be returned only during class meetings (irrelevant). The weekend field trip of was October 18 - 21 is required. For Fall 2020 the field trip exercise will be replaced by a 5-8 page term paper on a marine biological subject. Check with me for approval of your topic choice. If the Greensboro Nature and Science Center opens during the proposed field trip time, then a report on a visit to Nature and Science Center will constitute the field experience of this course. At UNCG, we operate on an Academic Honor Policy for all tests, laboratory reports, etc. You will be asked to write out and sign the following pledge on all materials submitted for a grade: "I have abided by the UNCG Academic Honor Policy on this test." (signed) - Violators of this important policy will receive a grade of "0" on that particular test or assignment. DIRECTIONS FOR SUBMITTING ABSTRACTS 1. The primary research paper to be abstracted must have appeared in a refereed journal; this means that it must have a published Abstract at the beginning of the paper, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Discussion and/or Conclusion, and Literature Cited sections. 2. The paper to be abstracted must be related in some way to the broad field of Marine Biology. 3. The abstract must be in your own words, should summarize the salient points in the paper, and should not be more than about 150 words in length. 4. Abstract must be typed (printed) on a 5" X 8" index card. 5. A xeroxed copy of the published abstract must be taped to the reverse side of the card. 6. Format of the card should be as follows: Last name of the first author, then his/her names and/or initials; then name(s) of other authors as they appear in the article; then date (year of publication); then title of article exactly as it is printed; then name of periodical, volume number, issue number, and inclusive pages. For example: Doe, Jane Q., R. H. Stavn, and I. Newton. 1997. The uptakes of nitrogen and iron as a function of solar illumination in the upper layers of the ocean. Journ. Mar. Biol. 66(4): 691-696. 7. The date of the article should never be older than three (3) years. 8. Put your name at the end of the abstract so that credit can be properly given. 9. Three (3) points on any one lecture test will be given if the abstract is submitted properly done on or before the deadline indicated on the schedule. 10. Articles should come from marine biology/ecology journals; some examples of acceptable journals are: Ecology Wilson Bulletin Ecological Monographs Nature Biological Bulletin Evolution Marine Biology Bioscience American Journal of Botany Science Journal of Plant Physiology Limnology and Oceanography Journal of Insect Physiology Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology American Naturalist Journal of Animal Ecology I have found websites for nearly every journal on this list. You may be allowed to download only an article abstract. You may be able to download a full article if the library has an online subscription to a given journal. You can find the journal that the library has an online subscription for by going to the HYPERLINK "http://library.uncg.edu/"Library Home Page. Then you click on journal finder which will ask you for the journal title that you type in. The journal finder then tells you whether or not the library has an online subscription. If this is the case you can download an article, after plowing through a few menus, and the article will not cost you anything. Your final step in finding an article to abstract in your own words may have to be to go to the library and look up a hard copy of the journal. $b|ВДФЦджф . 2 < ` j Ф Ш а к є & , 0 œ Є І ў 0 : < @ А К М . 8 : > Ќ Ж И ^ Œ Є Ў їяхмамамамхмхмхмхмФФКФКФКЎЅЅ™ЅЅ™ЅЅ™Ѕ™ЅЅ™ЅЅЅ™H*EHCJCJ^JOJQJH*CJ^JOJQJCJ6^J]OJQJCJ^JOJQJH*CJ5^JOJQJCJ5^JOJQJCJ>*5^JOJQJCJ5^J\OJQJCJ^JOJQJCJ5^JOJQJ5^JOJQJ5^JOJQJ2Ў А В М О Т :DFžШджvŽœžЂР(68<T ъ(<@Z€‚†žўfjмъьdhкђB„ѕьрѕььрѕььрѕььрѕььдХИЌЂЂЂЂ•‘дьдь††ььдьдХИдддЌЂ|CJ5^JOJQJCJ^JaJOJQJ5\CJ65^J]OJQJCJ5^JOJQJCJ5^J\OJQJH*CJ5^J\OJQJCJ65^J]\OJQJCJ5^J\OJQJCJ6^J]OJQJCJ^JOJQJH*CJ^JOJQJ0„Ц –ЎТФр@D^АОР,Ldrv„†Єю№&4ѕщндддШОдВдВЃ–д‹{h{h{д^нВВM CJ65^JaJ]\OJQJCJ^J\OJQJ%H*EHCJCJ6^JaJ]OJQJH*EHCJCJ^JaJOJQJCJ^JaJOJQJH*CJ5^J\OJQJCJ65^J]\OJQJCJ5^J\OJQJH*CJ^JOJQJCJ6^J]OJQJCJ^JOJQJCJ5^J\OJQJCJ65^JOJQJCJ5^JOJQJ46DFJЌђ &>\`xz~&F^lђсЯЦКААЃwk_Ц_Qђђ@ CJ65^JaJ]\OJQJCJ5^JaJ\OJQJCJ5^J\OJQJCJ5^J\OJQJ+H*EHCJCJ65^JaJ]\OJQJ+H*EHCJCJ65^JaJ]\OJQJCJ65^J]OJQJCJ5^JOJQJCJ5^J\OJQJCJ^JOJQJ#H*CJ65^JaJ]\OJQJ CJ65^JaJ]\OJQJCJ5^JaJ\OJQJlnp~€„ юќўz”–˜шьjx|№тбТИИЅ}ЅqhИ\qhqhPFH*CJ^JOJQJCJ6^J]OJQJCJ5^J\OJQJCJ^JOJQJCJ5^J\OJQJ#H*CJ65^JaJ]\OJQJ+H*EHCJCJ65^JaJ]\OJQJ%H*EHCJCJ5^JaJ\OJQJCJ^J\OJQJH*CJ5^JaJ\OJQJ CJ65^JaJ]\OJQJCJ5^JaJ\OJQJH*CJ5^JaJ\OJQJ|~ŒЈЖИќtЌє ":dœЮт ( , . < > T V l n ˆ Ф Ъ Ю ёржЭСжЕЈЈЈ~~~mmaaжЭЕЭЕЭЕЭWЭжCJ>*^JOJQJCJ5^JaJOJQJ CJ65^JaJ]\OJQJ CJ65^JaJ]\OJQJCJ5^JaJ\OJQJCJ^JaJOJQJCJ65^J]OJQJCJ5^J\OJQJCJ6^J]OJQJCJ^JOJQJH*CJ^JOJQJ!H*EHCJCJ6^J]OJQJH*EHCJCJ^JOJQJ!Ю !! !8!f!ž!в!д!т!ф!ш!""@"D"Z"^"`"’"”"˜"T&V&Z&Р(Ф(Ц(њ(d)Ф)v*2+,,‚,†,&-*-ќ-./>/0 0(080`0d0їъовХвЖвІвїїšїїїї†її|їїїїїїїїїїїїїїїїїїї†її†їїCJ6^JOJQJCJ>*^JOJQJCJ5^JOJQJCJ6^J]OJQJCJ6>*5^J]\OJQJCJ65^J]\OJQJCJ>*5^J\OJQJCJ5^J\OJQJCJ5^J\OJQJH*CJ5^J\OJQJCJ^JOJQJ0d0€1Т1|6ˆ6І6Т687<7Ъ7Ю7 8*808@8;;њ=ў=>F>*?2?@@p@2AlAˆABBdBрB˜CђCіCўCаDкD^FbFиGмGJHTHXHZH^HhHjH|H„H†HŽHI(I*I.I:IТIвIўIJNJ"KbKЄKъK(LvLъLюL’MјMќMўMќNPtPvPїэїэїэїїїїїсїэїїїїїзїїїїїїїЪїїїїїїїїїїїїїїїэїсїэїїэїэїїсїэїзїїїїїїїїїїїїїїїїїїШUCJ>*5^J\OJQJCJ5^JOJQJCJ5^J\OJQJCJ>*^JOJQJCJ^JOJQJOvPРPТPФPцPшPQ.QTQАQЬQ`RZS`TzTїѕъѕсдссдссссB*phџ33CJ^JOJQJCJ^JOJQJ0J1CJ^JOJQJUjU&dцb Ц Ш . 0 Ј > @ О < > К ` Ž Р Т H њѕ№ыцфтромкиждваЮЬЪШЦФ999999999999999999$a$9$a$9$a$9$a$9$a$ иx Ђ:<Ђь>@„†hjюfhмD†§ћљїѕѓёяэыщчхуспнлйзегЭ5ЄЄ9999999999999999999999†Ш ˜ЦBDТNˆHJЎє(^`H‚„љѓёяэыщчхуспнлйзегбЯЭЫЩ99999999999999999995ЄЄ5ЄЄ„ |ъь’КўvЎі$fžф * , !ц!B"D"\"§ћљїѕѓёяэыщчхуспнлйзегЮ9$a$99999999999999999999\"^"`"–"˜"X&Z&Т(Ф(Ц(ќ(f)Ц)x*4+,„,†,(-*-ў-.§ћљїѕѓёяэфоивЬЦРОфМфК9999 ЦК9 ЦК9 ЦК9 ЦК9 ЦК9 ЦК 9 & F Ц999999999.b0d0:7<7Ь7Ю7;;ќ=ў=>H>,?@r@4ABfBтBšCєCієящрормгЭЫЦППППППППП9 Ц'а9$a$99 Ц' 9 & F Ц199 9 & F Ц9 Ц19 & F9 9 & F ЦєCіCвD`FbFкGмGlHIJPJ$KdKІKьK*LxLьL”MњMќMўMјђьцркгггггбЯЭЫЩЧХУСП99999999999 Ц1а9 Ц9 Ц9 Ц9 Ц9 Ц9 ЦFаўMўNPVQbR\SbT|T§ћљїѕѓё99999990Аа/ Ар=!
