Syllabus
Text:
No formal textbook will be used in this class. However, a variety
of written (books, journals) and electronic materials will be used daily.
Course description: The purpose
of this course is to familiarize students with a wide variety of organically
based disorders that have a negative impact on swallowing, speech, language,
cognition and independent daily functioning. Disorders with congenital, acquired
and progressive etiologies will be included. Information about these disorders

will include:
a)
the rate
of occurrence (incidence and prevalence),
c)
risk factors,
d)
preventative
measures,
e)
associated
speech and language deficits,
f)
associated
cognitive deficits,
g)

summaries,
4)

the ability to discuss pertinent scholarly material.
Attendance: Attendance is your responsibility.
However, unexcused absences will result in lower class and group participation
grades.
Learning Assistance: If you have been formally diagnosed
with a physical or learning problem that might interfere with your ability
to complete the course requirements, you must inform the instructor prior
to the second class period. Every effort will be made to accommodate your
special needs.
Grading criteria:
1)
Class participation
(25%) – Each day, class members will discuss information related to
an assigned topic. These discussions result from reading of journal articles,
class presentations, group learning projects, and lectures. Each student is
expected to contribute to the discussion by presenting related information
and/or asking pertinent questions. At the end of each full week of class,
the instructor will provide an individual written critique of each student’s
participation to date. Grading guidelines are attached.
2)
Group participation
(25%) – Students are expected to participate fully in every group learning
activity. At the end of the course, each student will anonymously rate the
contribution of the other students in his/her group. These ratings, in combination
with the instructors rating, will be used to determine the grade for group
participation. Grading guidelines are attached.
3)
Written summaries
(25%) – SIX written summaries, 1-2 pages in length,
will be completed throughout the class. The summaries will be turned in to
the instructor as indicated on the class schedule. Each of the summaries will
relate to specific information presented and discussed in class. Each summary
must contain a list of references and resources, including at least 2 current
peer reviewed journal articles, at least 2 current books, and no more than
4 professional websites. Written feedback
will be provided to each student for each summary. Grading guidelines are
attached.
4)
Presentations
(25%) – Each student will be responsible for presenting information
to the class pertaining to at least one organically based disorder. The presentations
cannot exceed 20 minutes in length and must represent a synthesized summary
of the information that was obtained about the disorder. Grading guidelines
for the presentations are attached.
Grade assignment: Grades will be assigned as follows:
