Departmental Policies

Academic Integrity Violations

Online courses are particularly susceptible to academic integrity violations, most notably plagiarism. Be alert for such violations, and when you detect them, handle them in accordance with UNCG's Academic Integrity Policy.

  • Notify the student via email (keep a copy). Include the information in this template, which you may modify to allow for a telephone conference. Instruct the student to download the Academic Integrity Violation Report Form prior to the conference: http://academicintegrity.uncg.edu/AI_Violation.pdf.
  • Prior to your conference with the student, prepare a one-line description of the violation and determine which sanction you propose (for a complete list of violations and sanctions, see section III of the Academic Integrity Policy).
    • Failure to Cite Sources: From mandatory rewrite to zero on assignment.
    • Plagiarism: From F on assignment to recommendation for expulsion.
  • During your conference with the student, have the student fill out the Academic Integrity Violation Report Form. The student must initial all the statements in Section I, initial a plea in Section III, and sign the form. You may dictate the information for Section II and your contact information (office phone and work email) for the student to fill out. The BLS Program address is 28 Foust.
  • Instruct the student to fax the completed form to 336.334.4007. Once the student has faxed the form, follow up with the Dean of Students' office at 336.334.5514.
  • If the student does not accept responsibility for the violation or does not accept your proposed sanction (or if the student refuses to confer with you and submit the signed form), a hearing will be scheduled by the Dean of Students' Office. Hearings for distance-learning students and/or instructors will be conducted by conference call.

Incomplete Grades

Incomplete grades should be avoided in BLS classes; it is very complicated for students to complete an online class once it has ended, particularly if they need to participate in Blackboard discussions. More often than not, BLS students with Incompletes do not complete their courses and end up failing. Therefore, an Incomplete should only be given if these conditions are met:

  • The student has requested an Incomplete, for valid reasons, prior to the end of the session; or an Incomplete has been recommended by a University official under the authority of the Undergraduate Bulletin.
  • The student and instructor have made specific arrangements for completion of the missing assignments—including reasonable deadlines.
  • The instructor files with the BLS office the student's average grade and the specific work that must be accomplished before the Incomplete can be removed.

If a student who is otherwise doing well simply vanishes or fails to turn in a final paper, file the student's final grade as-is. The University makes reasonable allowances for retroactively changing a student's grade in extenuating circumstances.

Nonparticipating Students

The instructor of a BLS course may drop a student who has not participated in the class or established contact by the end of the first week (the fifth day of the session, including weekends).

  • Print this form: http://web.uncg.edu/adv/forms/class_attendance.pdf
  • Fill out the instructor's portion (student information available in UNCGenie).
  • Specify whether the student never participated or stopped participating.
  • Return the form to:
    Student Academic Services
    159 Mossman Building
    Greensboro, NC 27402-6170

UNCGenie

How to Enter Course Grades

M-, D-, and X-campus sections are combined in Blackboard, but grades must be entered separately in UNCGenie.

  • Log on to UNCGenie using your ID Number and PIN.
  • Click Faculty Services.
  • Click Final Grades.
  • Select Term and click Submit Term.
  • Pick your course and click Submit CRN.
You should see the class roster for that section.
  • Select or key in the grade for each student.
(W & WF are not faculty assignable grades but reflect student action.)
  • After entering grades, click Submit. Grades are recorded in academic history.
You may access the grade roster later to fill in any blanks, but any grade changes must be made via the paper grade change form.
  • Click Return to Menu to enter grades for another course, or click Exit to log out.

UNCG Campus Bookstore

How to order textbooks

The BLS Program office does not order textbook adoptions for BLS classes; course faculty should contact the bookstore in person. It's never too early to adopt books for your upcoming semesters. The bookstore prefers to have adoptions several months in advance, and they like it even more if you can let them know the course will repeat in an upcoming semester.

When ordering textbooks, have your course number and section (e.g., "BLS 300-01D") and sufficient information to positively identify your books (ISBNs are ideal).

  • Order online at http://uncg.bncollege.com/ (requires login).
  • Call the bookstore at 336.334.5563 and ask for the textbook manager.
