College of Arts & Sciences General Education Core Requirements

In addition to BLS major courses, students must meet portions of the following requirements, as determined by the initial transfer credit received upon admission to UNCG.

All Students:

University Residency and GPA Minimum Requirements

  • 122 Total Semester Credits:
    Accepted transfer credit + courses completed at UNCG.
  • 31 Semester Credits from UNCG:
    Minimum 12 s.h. toward any major and 9 s.h. toward any minor.
  • 36 Semester Credits at 300 Level or Above.
    (All BLS courses are at 300 & 400 level.)
  • 2.0 Cumulative GPA:
    Minimum GPA for coursework attempted at UNCG.

College of Arts and Sciences Foreign Language Proficiency

  • GFL: Foreign Language Intermediate Proficiency:
    204 level; requires 4 semesters for most students.
    May be met with transfer or CLEP credit.
    German language series is available online at UNCG.

Writing Intensive & Speaking Intensive Markers — Major

  • One course within the BLS Major must have the WI marker.
  • One course within the BLS Major must have the SI marker.

Students Without Comprehensive Articulation (CAA):

Comprehensive Articulation is awarded to students who have earned an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree from a North Carolina community college, or have met all General Education Core requirements, within the period covered by the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement. All requirements must be satisfied with a grade of C or above. Students who have not been awarded Comprehensive Articulation must meet all College of Arts and Sciences General Education Core Requirements with initial transfer credit, courses taken from UNCG, or credit transferred subsequent to admission.

College of Arts & Sciences General Education Core Requirements (GEC+CAR)

  • GFA: Fine Arts: 1 course. ¹
  • GLT: Literature: 2 courses. ³
  • GPR: Philosophical, Religious, & Ethical Perspectives: 1 course. ¹
  • GMO: Modern History: 1 course. ¹
  • GPM: Pre-Modern History: 1 course. ²
  • GMT: Mathematics: 1 course. °
  • GLS: Life Science: 1 course. ²
  • GPS: Physical Science: 1 course. ¹
  • NS: Additional Natural Science (GLS or GPS): 1 course. *
  • LAB: Natural Science Lab, to accompany GLS or GPS: 1 laboratory. ²
  • GRD1: Reasoning and Discourse: ENG 101 or Equivalent: 1 course. ³
  • GRD: Reasoning and Discourse: 1 course. ²
  • GSB: Social & Behavioral Sciences: 3 courses from ≥ 2 disciplines. ¹

Markers (combined with courses above)

Marker requirements are waived incrementally, based upon initial transfer credit to UNCG. Students receiving 60 to 90 semester credits for coursework transferred prior to matriculation at UNCG will be granted waivers for 2 GL markers, 2 WI markers and 1 SI marker.

  • GLOB1: Global Nonwestern (GN): 1 course.
  • GLOB2: Global (GL or GN): 3 courses.
  • SI: Speaking Intensive: 2 courses (1 must be in BLS major).
  • WI: Writing Intensive: 4 courses (1 must be in BLS major).

Former UNCG Students:

Students enrolled at UNCG prior to 2001, who have not qualified for Comprehensive Articulation, may be under College of Arts and Sciences Liberal Education Requirements (CLER).
