Transfer Credit:
College Level Examination Program (CLEP)

Offered by the College Board at locations around the country (and the world), CLEP tests are designed for students who have done college-level work outside the formal curriculum and can successfully demonstrate their knowledge. UNCG accepts qualifying scores on some tests as transfer credit, which can be applied to specific GEC+CAR core requirements or used as elective credit.

Locations & Fees

CLEP tests are administered at testing centers around the country (and the world). You do not have to come to UNCG to take your test if you can take it at a more convenient location. See the CLEP website for a list of test centers.

Each CLEP test costs $70 (as of July 2008), and test centers are allowed to charge a small additional fee for administration. Some tests have a separate fee for an optional essay, but UNCG does not require the optional essay on any CLEP test.

Preparation

Several competing publishers put out preparatory guides for each CLEP test. Those guides are available through most large commercial booksellers. They will give you a sense of what material you will encounter on each test, and many of them offer sample tests that will help you predict your performance on the actual test (bear in mind that the sample test is only a rough indicator).

If you are taking the CLEP for foreign language, it is best to have recent study at the intermediate level, whether in an academic classroom or elsewhere.

Level of Difficulty

CLEP tests are difficult. They are testing for an advanced level of knowledge that would normally be achieved through one or more semesters of college-level study. Some subject tests will be more difficult than others depending on the individual's strengths.

The Gamble

CLEP credits are awarded only if you achieve a minimum score. If you do not reach that minimum score, no credit will be awarded, and there is a six-month waiting period before you can attempt the same test again.

Official Transcripts

When you finish your test you will be given an unofficial score. That sheet will not be accepted for UNCG credit. The registrar's office cannot award credit until your official transcript arrives, which can take a few weeks. If you're taking a test to meet final graduation requirements, be sure to allow time for the official transcript to arrive.
