The College of Arts & Sciences Values Diversity:

The goal of the College is "inclusive excellence." Diversifying the faculty promotes excellence, and pursuit of excellence promotes a diverse faculty. There are many benefits of diversity as inclusive excellence:

  • Exposes students to a broad range of viewpoints and experiences, inside the classroom and out
  • Prepares students for living and working with people from a wide range of backgrounds
  • Provides an appropriate range of role models for a diverse student body
  • Expands the range of research and teaching interests represented in departments and programs
  • Increases collegiality for under-represented faculty

"In this broad sense, diversity includes differences in ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, and numerous other aspects of the human condition, all of which may challenge our students' perceptions and understanding and contribute usefully to their intellectual and personal development." From Agenda for Faculty Diversity."

According to the Fact Book 2007-08, "68% of undergraduate students were female"; 21% were African-American, as were 14% of graduate students.
