How To Create an Assessment

You can add assessments into your Blackboard course in two ways. You can click into the Control Panel and select Assessment Manager, and then choose to "Add Test." Alternatively, you can go into a content area and choose to add a Test, much the same way as you add a regular item to a content area. Note: if you create the test in the Assessment Manager, you will still need to add the test to a content area by clicking into the content area and choosing to add a Test.

Steps for Creating an Exam in the Assessment Manager:

Once you have created your assessment(s) in the Assessment Manager, they will be stored there but you will still need to add them into a content area. To add a Test to a content area, do the following:

Availability Options for Assessments

Once you have created and added an assessment, you must then set availability options for the assessment. After you submit to add the test (see directions above), you will see two options- one option to Modify the Test, which allows you to edit your test questions themselves. The other option, Modify the Test options, allows you to set the availability of the test for students. Availability options include:

It is important to note that if you allow multiple attempts, the Bb gradebook will ONLY store the LAST COMPLETED attempt. It will not record scores for all attempts, nor will it average scores on attempts.

Also, if you set a timer on an exam, students will not be kicked out of an exam when the time limit is exceeded. Instead, Bb time stamps all timed assignments, so you will need to look at each student's exam submission in the gradebook in order to see how much time each student took to complete the exam.

The Blackboard manual (linked from your Control Panel) contains detailed information on assessment, including step-by-step instructions for each question type. If you have further questions, please consult the Bb manual.
