How to
Use WS_FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
Print this information out before you begin.
File
Transfer Protocol is a way to transfer your web pages from your computer
to the UNCG unix server.
1.
To use ftp you will need a UNIX username and password. If you do
not know this information, contact Client Services. More information
is available at http://www.uncg.edu/irc/docs/general/email.htm.
You
will also need write access to the directory you wish to upload files
to on the UNCG unix server. Contact your school's ITC for assistance
on this.
2. If you have
not done so already, install the WS_FTP
program. Follow these steps:
- Go to the Application Folder
(on your desktop) (You must be logged in to the network to see this
folder)
- Double-click UNCG Tree
- Double-click the UNCG Client
Community folder
- Drag the WS_FTP LE icon to your
desktop
3. Open the
FTP program. Here is the screen :
4.
Now enter the following information. In Profile Name enter what name
you would like to remember this FTP session as; you can name it anything
you like. Next, in Host Name type in the address EXACTLY as you see
it here. Host type is filled in for you. User ID is you UNIX user name,
no spaces. Enter your UNIX password in Password. Click on OK and you
will be connected with the UNCG server.
5.
The opening screen takes you to the public side of our server. You
will want to go to the private. To do that, click on "ChgDir"
(this is the Change Directory function found at the upper right). You
will get a dialogue box called Input. You will need to type in the name
of the folder that holds departmental information. For example:
/afs/uncg.edu/html/bae/courses/
6.
This is the screen that will allow you to transfer files to the UNIX
server.
There are two sides:
Local System and Remote System. Locate the folder on the Local (Your
computer) system first. You can do this by traveling up using the green
arrow, or down using the scroll bar. To open a folder double click on
it. Other drives (like the floppy) can be found by scrolling down. Then
on the remote site, find and open your folder by double clicking on
it.
7.
On the remote side we are now in your folder. Only you have access to
add information to your folder. (F) Shows an entire folder that is to
be sent to the server. It is a good idea to put all the information
about your course into one folder. You will most likely want to name
the folder something like (course name & number): mkt320 (Note:
NO SPACES).. To send the entire folder over click on the arrow pointing
to the right -OR- if you forgot to put all your work into a folder and
would like to make one now click on MkDir.
8.
Select the file from your local system you want to transfer to the remote
site (server). The selected file will appear in a blue highlight. Make
sure the Auto checkbox near the bottom is checked.

9. After the
folder has been transferred over, double check to make sure all the
contents went by clicking on the folder. Here are the results. You see
the colosseum.gif file is in both windows.
10.
The files have been successfully sent. Now you must close the session
by clicking Close.
11. To find
your files on the internet type the web address into your browser. For
example:
http://www.uncg.edu/bae/courses/yourname/
http://www.uncg.edu/eng/courses/yourunixusername/
12. Then select the file you want to see.
