Communicating in an online environment gives all students the opportunity for an equal say in the class. Students who are hesitant to speak out in class tend to be more comfortable interacting online, and stereotyping is less likely to emerge.
Courses are delivered via the Internet, which means that both students and instructors can view course material anywhere there is access to a computer with an internet connection. Also, students can download materials to their computer and review course material even when not connected to the Internet.
The communication tools in UNCG's course management system allow for quick and easy communication with students through tools such as announcements, chat, discussions and email. Also, Blackboard's ease of use makes it possible for faculty to add content to an online course in a matter of seconds.
The power of the Internet allows for many ways of adding interactivity into courses. Students can click buttons, work through simulations and case studies, watch videos, take quizzes, participate in discussions, and much more!
The Internet contains a wealth of resources and knowledge that can be used in online classes, particularly on topics not covered in the lecture material. Links can be added to a course as required or supplementary links, students can be asked to research topics and find relevant links, and students can evaluate links for accuracy.
Teaching online courses gives instructors the opportunity to enhance their computer skills while receiving full technical support for the online classes. Additionally, many students also take online courses in hopes of improving their computer skills.
Online courses can be extremely flexible for both students and instructors. Classes do not have to meet on any particular day or time. This is particularly useful for students who work and/or have family commitments that demand a lot of time during the day.
