UNCG's 5th Annual International Human Rights Film Series: Media and Human Rights
This fall's series focuses on the power of media -- (photo) journalism, video-documentary, and television -- to publicize and to frame human rights abuses and the search for justice and to enlarge a democratic sphere of action. The films take place in Somalia during the famine of 1993, Rwanda in the 1994 genocide and ten years later, the Burmese protests of 2007, and the rising popularity of the Afghan American-idol style t.v. program, Afghan Star. Across these different places and times, the films raise questions about the global reach of media, how human rights violations are defined, how media create audience, and what responsibilities accompany media consumption. A faculty member will introduce each film and lead a discussion afterward. All screenings are free and open to the public. Films begin at 6:30 pm in Ferguson Rm. 100, UNCG. Sponsored by MERGE and the International and Global Studies Program.
