Alumni Awards

History

By the late 1950s the Alumnae Association wished to recognize its own. The Board appointed an Alumnae Service Award Committee with Cora Stegall Rice `45 of Raleigh as its first chair. The purpose of the award was to honor alumnae who "by their unselfish and faithful service have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of the College." The first Alumnae Service Award was presented in 1960 to Laura Weill Cone, Class of 1910, on the occasion of her class's fiftieth reunion. By 1965, the Alumni Association Board of Trustees voted to expand the Alumni Service Award to recognize alumni for service beyond the University. Henceforth, candidates would be considered for their "significant contributions to the liberal arts ideal in service to the University at Greensboro, the Greater University, or to the nation, state, or local community." Awards would only be presented to alumni, and the privilege of citing up to five recipients in a given year would now be possible.

Another change occurred in 1985 when the Board amended the name of the award to the Alumni Distinguished Service Award to better emphasize exemplary work. In 1998, the Alumni Association Board of Directors approved an addition to the Alumni Awards program. The Young Alumni Award recognizes outstanding personal and professional achievement by alumni under the age of 40.

Alumni Distinguished Service Award

The criteria for the current Alumni Distinguished Service Award states that the award must be given to a UNCG alumni who have made significant contributions to the liberal arts ideal in Service. Distinctive service may have been rendered on national, state, and /or local levels. Nominees from each of the academic schools and the College of Arts and Sciences may be considered for the award.

The recipient must exemplify creative and continuous personal growth and a willingness to embrace our changing world. This award also recognizes outstanding achievement and service to the recipient's profession or community/society or university. A maximum of two awards may be given annually.

The deadline for submitting a nomination is November 30. To receive a nomination form, please call the Alumni Office at (336)334-5696 or e-mail Mary Swantek at m_swante@uncg.edu.
