It’s the start of a new year and with that comes new adventures. There are many exciting opportunities for Piedmont Triad Area alumni to explore and connect with each other and with UNCG.



Around the House Series


Branches of Love

Throughout the spring semester, come to the Alumni House and enjoy some wine and cheese, meet other alumni and learn just a little bit more about what our faculty and staff are working on - whether it’s exciting research or a dean’s vision for the future. It’s a little like being a student again, only better.

Each event, held in the Virginia Dare Room, is $10 per person which includes the reception, presentation and parking in the Oakland Parking deck (accessible from Kenilworth Street and Forest Street and a short walk from the Alumni House). All alumni and their guests are welcome.

Class of 1957 Monthly Lunch Gathering

UNCG Career Expo 2012

Career Expo
The Career Expo is a networking and recruiting event for UNCG students and alumni in all majors. This is an outstanding opportunity for you to meet and to talk directly with a variety of recruiters and hiring managers about careers and openings for full-time positions, so dress professionally and bring your resume. This career fair includes employers representing local, regional and national companies such as the Bank of Oak Ridge, Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC, Coca Cola Bottling Company, Fastenal, iSurity, Kroger Mid-Atlantic, Syngenta, and the Target Stores. “Drag Kings and Queens”

Sponsored by the Women’s and Gender Studies Program, Deana Coble will share her documentary on two drag families in Greensboro and discuss the film and its impact. What does it mean to be a drag mom or a drag kid? This film explains the drag life with humor and sincerity.

The Southern Entrepreneurship in the Arts Conference

The Southern Entrepreneurship in the Arts Conference fills a major void in helping visual, performing and literary artists learn how to better create sustainable income through self-employment and creativity-oriented businesses. Attendees include students and community members from a multi-state area. In total, more than 400 individuals have participated in the SEAC conference over the past two years. Each year, more than 20 speakers from a wide variety of backgrounds have shared their expertise and experience with attendees. The opening keynote speaker for the 2012 conference will be Beverly McIver. Beverly is widely acknowledged as a significant presence in contemporary American art in general and has charted a new direction as an African-American woman artist.

Vital Grace Project - 2012 Showcase

Saturday, Feb. 18

Led by associate professor Duane Cyrus from UNCG’s School of Music, Theatre and Dance, The Vital Grace Project—2012 Showcase is an evening celebrating Black History Month and African American culture with a stellar lineup featuring some of America’s most successful music and dance artists! Reflecting Cyrus Art Production’s mission of building inclusive communities and supporting the development of young artists, this exciting performance comes to the Triad area for one night only! The Vital Grace Project—2012 Showcase will feature performances from tap sensation Maurice Chestnut, singer Rahbi, and UNCG students who will present workshop choreography by Jeffrey Page, an Emmy-nominated, and MTV’s 2011 Video Music Award winning choreographer. Page will also appear at this event. Featured local performances include “Location of Spirit” by Duane Cyrus, set to live vocal performance of traditional Spirituals and Gospel.

Neo-Black Society 45th Anniversary Committee

If you were a member of the Neo-Black Society when you were at student at UNCG, we need you and want to hear from you.

UNCG Neo-Black Society alumni are invited to attend the first organizational meeting for the Neo-Black Society 45th Anniversary on Wednesday, Feb. 22.  The 45th anniversary celebration will take place during the 2013 UNCG Homecoming Weekend, and together we will make this pivotal reunion one to remember.

Spartan Basketball Lineup for February

The UNCG men’s basketball team continues SoCon play in February with home games against The Citadel on Feb. 2, College of Charleston on Feb. 15 and Wofford on Feb. 21. The home game versus Wofford will be Fan Appreciation night with a special ticket offer of 2 tickets for $10.

The UNCG women’s basketball team plays their final four home conference games in February. The Spartans take on Western Carolina on Feb. 4 in a special National Girls and Women in Sports game supporting Breast Cancer Awareness. Fight Like A Spartan pink T-shirts will be available for $5, as well as a raffle items. All proceeds will be donated to breast cancer research.

The women’s team will also play Elon on Feb. 6, Davidson on Feb. 14, and Wofford on Feb. 27.

Spartans in the SoCon - March 2 thru 5
The UNCG men’ and women’s basketball will be travelling to Asheville for the SoCon Basketball championships March 2-5 and they need you there to cheer them on! The UNCG Alumni Association and Spartan Club invite all alumni and friends to join us at The Bier Garden before and after each game for a snack or a cold one. You probably walked past the Alumni House a million times while you were a student. You may have attended meetings or even a wedding in the Virginia Dare Room. Now you can relive UNCG memories with a watercolor portrait of the Alumni House painted by artist William Mangum ‘75, ‘83 MFA.

The finished work hangs over the mantle in the Pecky Cypress Room in the Alumni House. Click here to view a video of the painting’s creation.
