OBJECTIVES

The primary objective is be able to draw volume convincingly so that the objects drawn feel very three-dimensional, solid, and weighty.  In short, the main objective is to convey a given object's unique form and structure.  The second objective is to be able to make the objects' feel united with their surroundings and to address general compositional elements in drawing.  Lastly, this course will hopefully show that volume and space are not mutually exclusive, but both are needed to create a believable and unified drawing.

Week Class Activity
SECTION I

WEEK 1

WEEK 2

WEEK 3

WEEK 4

THE FUNDAMENTALS OF DRAWING-Measurement

-Gesture-its application and philosophy
-The quick sketch-proportion and page layout

-Construction Points and Lines
-Mapping, Plotting, and Charting
-Landmarks

-Composition-using the entire rectangle and the creation of form and    spaceinstead of isolated objects
-Relationships- relating the parts creates specific space and accurate    volume/shape
-This is done sucessfully using construction points and lines

-Extended Gesture- mapping and plotting continuously
-The results create volume and space

SECTION II

WEEK 5

WEEK 6-7

WEEK 8-9

THE FUNDAMENTALS OF DRAWING-Shape

-Unity and relationship between shape and negative shape
-Blind Contour-foreshortening and its influence on perception
-The square, cicle, triangle, oval. ring
-Shape creates the three dimensional qualities of an object-mass, solidity, weight

Mass Conceptions or Shapes
- The cube- relating all other mass conceptions to the cube, thereby, paying more attention to all the forms' fronts, backs, sides, tops, bottoms, etc
-Learning to draw proficiently the basic mass conceptions of: thecube,    cone, cylinder, sphere, and doughnut

-More Massing of shapes
-Learning to relate and to invent simplified shapesto convey complex forms and objects
-Drawing shapes on the surfaces of mass conceptions
- Drawing hybrid mass conceptions: cylindrical cube, pyramid, etc

SECTION III
WEEK 10-11

WEEK 12-13

WEEK 14-16

ENHANCED VOLUME
-Contour lines

-Planes
-Learning to keep in mind the cube, mass conceptions, hybrid conceptions as describe under WEEK 6 and 7
-Plane breaks and changes using only line

-Value
-Massing the most basic planes- 3 value system
-Plane breaks and changes(major)- 3 value system
-Graded planes-multi value system
