Course Description:

Art 360 Foundations of Art Education (3:2:1)  Pr. junior standing.

An introduction to the art theoretical and philosophical foundations for Art Education K-12. A field placement practicum in schools or other appropriate settings is included. A prerequisite for student teaching.
This course is designated as Writing Intensive;  offered fall semester only

Options: for Special Licensure Students with permission

Learning Outcomes/Goals

  1. Students will become aquatinted with art philosophy, aesthetics, and art criticism for children and youth in K-12 Art Programs and will develop their own philosophy of Art Education.
  2. Students will be able to discuss issues, theory, and philosophy related to art for children and youth in K-12 Art Programs
  3. Students will read the literature of art education and learn about the major leaders in the field.
  4. Students will complete an introductory practicum experience in schools or other appropriate settings prior to student teaching.
  5. Students will complete a review of basic technology skills for art education and demonstrate those skills in a portfolio.

  • Hurwitz and Day,  Children and Their Art, 8th edition.
  • Articles or chapters (see Reading Guide and Bibliography)
  • The UNCG Teacher Education Handbook 
Course Content
  1. Lecture/discussions on art philosophy, issues, aesthetics, and criticism and the role these play in K-12 Art Programs.
  2. Guided readings,  discussion of aesthetic education and of the major figures such as Edmund Burke Feldman, Elliot Eisner, Al Hurwitz, and others, and writings.
  3. A 36 contact hours practicum in schools or other appropriate settings.
  4. Thorough acquaintance with the requirements for "A" Licensure in Art K-12 and the UNCG Teacher Education Program (Teacher Education Handbook)
