Nature of Art
How does art function in American Culture?    Choose one of the following and discuss it’s role in a Elementary Art Program:  Fine Art,  Visual Art, Popular Art,  Crafts,  Aesthetics, Art As Activity  (individual working, exhibitions, clubs, competitions, study, hobby), Art As Collectibles, Art As Objects for Admiration (appreciation).    Do the various “labels” for kinds of art denote a philosophical stance or merely a skill/value level stance?  In what ways does Child Art have visual similarities to Adult Art and to Modern Art (20th century) in particular.  Does Child Art have any commercial value?  Explain how illustration in Children's Literature had an impact on the Art World and give examples?  Are there any Illustrators whose work you admire and why? Add one of your choice and discuss.
Nature of Childhood
Discuss how any of the sub topics below may affect the classroom.  (development; normal, abnormal)
  • physical (between birth and age 12)
  • health issues (accidents?  disease?  depression?  what else?)
  • social/emotional/spiritual development
  • artistic development
  • academic development
  • interests ( hobbies, games, sports, activities typical for children)
  • multiculturalism (race relations, ethic origins, community)
  • childhood culture (include literature, movies, tv, typical activities and interests)

Art Supplies
Check out the history of such typical art supplies as paper, pencil, crayon, pen and ink, paint:  how does the history of these items impact instruction.  Are there any new art supplies and have you used them?  Do students need to know technical information about supplies and/or historical information about supplies and materials?  What art supplies do children use and own most often?

Classroom Management, Organization, UpKeep, and Tips
  • What are some of the organizational problems that art teachers face with the plethora of supplies and equipment in a typical art room?  How does "art on a cart" impact this problem for Elementary?
  • What issues are attached to the balance between readily availability to students and available only when working on a certain project?  What are the storage of work issues?
  • Should the art teacher keep the work or let it go home with students as soon as they make it? What is the relationship between the immediacy of the work and the value of the work to the student if the work is kept?
  • What does being on the “state contract” mean for an art supplier?
  • Review some art supply sources and share your insights with the class?
  • Clean-up:  what should be expected of the teacher, the students, and/or the school janitorial staff?  How does teaching in the regular classroom instead of a dedicated art class room affect clean-up issues?
  • How is classroom set up for working different with elementary students and older students?
  • What is the best class room management, or supply tip that you have learned?
  • What are some of the safety issues art teachers must be aware of in the use of art supplies in the classroom?
