Teacher as Artist

Class Activity:
Teachers must be good practitioners of the skills
that they teach. Your BFA program prepares you in developing your
skills as a practicing artist and requires that you develop expertise in
one area (Drawing and Painting, Design, or Sculpture).
You should have a record digital photo/files of the best of your studio work. If you do not, now is the time to do so. [A digital camera is an art teacher/artist's best friend]
You should be able to discuss the direction, inspiration or influences upon your work, and where this work fits into to the current art world. If you have not prepared an artist statement about your work, now is the time to do so.
As a new emerging professional, you should begin to exhibit your work, both in the opportunities provided on campus and in the local community. If you have not done so yet, now is the time to begin to do so.
As an art teacher, you should continue to develop your studio skills and to participate in the art activities of the local community. Many art teachers belong to local art groups and submit work for exhibitions each year. You should keep informed of the various art activities in your local and regional area, attend exhibits and lectures, and participate in the broader art community.
Bring 6-8 pieces of your studio work to class and be prepared to discuss accomplishments and directions. See calendar for date.
Professional Credentials:
Résumé: Create a professional résumé.
Artist's Statement: Write an Artist's Statement concerning your studio art work. You can discuss your prefered media, your particular art interests and inspirational sources, and your intended directions in your current studio work.
Slides or Prints: Collect a sampling
of your studio work. [A slide sheet will hold 20 slides] Slides or
prints should be labled according to title, media, size, date, material,
or other important information.
Place the above materials in your 365 Notebook.
See caldendar for due date.
Additional Documentation: If you have other items that are appropriate documentation of your professional activities, you may add them.
This items and more will be added to your Art Education Teaching Portfolio
