Class News
from Dr. Rice
It seems that we are getting a very slow start. Please check in with email and with a post on the discussion forum.
The first papers were due last Friday and I have received only one so far. If you have not yet sent your paper, please drop an email and let me know when I can expect it. If you have questions, please let me know.

7-1-02 Getting Started
I have seen three people who are signed up for this class and had email from a fourth person.
If you have not yet e-mailed the instructor, please do so now. Please tell me which level of school you are most interested in and/or if you have a special curriculum interest.
Please check to the class roster and the email address linked to your name. It is important that this is correct for it is how your classmates will contact you. I will post what I have by Wednesday this week.
If you missed the class today what we did was go over the software here on the course site (discussion forum and web links) and talk about the resources available to you online and a bit about the history of the internet.
I learned just last week that the Lovejoy book is out of print. You may be able to get a copy (used?) through Amazon.com. If you cannot find this book in the library please check this online source. That site listed some as available today.
Perhaps the most important thing that will help you with the class work is knowing how to copy and paste from web pages into a word-processing program or into email. Both will help you with your posting on the class web site.
I can open most versions of Microsoft Word. If you are using Word, then you may send the paper as an attachment. When you send me your papers, and if your word process program isn't a version of Microsoft Word, please copy and paste them into the body of the e-mail. That way we won't have problems with incompatible software. You may want to print a copy to keep for your own records. You may also want to print a copy of your online postings to keep as your permanent record.
How to get the paper into the body of an e-mail :
When you are ready to do your paper,
1. Write it out in your word processing program, listing your sources
for the material at the end (full citation, please), check spelling and
proof.
When you are ready to send your paper:
2. In the word processing program, put the cursor at the top of the paper, then select all (menu) or Control A (keyboard), and this should highlight all the contents of the paper.
3. In the word processing program, once text is highlighted, Copy (menu) or Control C (keyboard) to the clipboard.
4. Open your email program, get a new message window to send, and place your cursor in the body of the email program, then Paste (menu) or Control V (keyboard)
5. Go back and fill in the email address and subject line, and send the email.
If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.
Thanks, RRice
