Response Paper
Topic:  Technology's Impact on Art Content and the Art World

Credit: 10% each

Topics to address:

This paper is asking that you think first broadly of technology as "know-how," as skill, as craft, and/or as knowledge; not just as a reference to electronic devices.  Think about the history of art when new ways of doing things emerged in society and how artists adapted the new technique for aesthetic purposes and how the "new" became content or subject matter in art works.

Then consider your readings in Lovejoy's   Postmodern Currents:  Art and Artists in the Age of Electronic Media, 2nd edition.  New Jersey, Prentice Hall, 1997.  How has this played out with electronic devices, especially the computer.

  1. Technology as subject matter for art making.   What kinds of technology (i.e. machines, or other "know how" activities can be found in the history of art)
  2. Technology/computer as an art tool for creative production.  Who is using this tool and for what purposes?  Where does fine art fit in this?
  3.  Technology/computer as support tool for creative persons or for research? (This can include office support, advertising support, communications support)
  4.  Technology as a bridge for crossover with other creative disciplines for art  students.  (Multimedia, performance art, etc.)
