Course Description   Welcome!

Exploration of issues in art or education which affect the teaching of art. 
May be repeated once for credit when the topic varies. (3:3) 
Pre-requisites:  Graduate status or permission of the instructor 
Offered:  Summer 2002, Second Session, June 27 to August 2, 2002

Objectives/Goals

The objectives of ART 565 - "Issues in Art Education:  Art Education and Technology " are to:
  1. explore the impact that technology is having on the world of art,  the field of art education, and on schools. 
  2. develop Advanced Technology Competencies for North Carolina art educators. 
  3. extend research skills and tools for educators, especially those that are technology based. 
  4. develop Discipline-based Art Education (DBAE) curriculum planning skills and strategies. 
  5. examine issues surrounding intellectual properties in terms of art, technology, the use of resources.

Grading/Evaluation

There are five required major activity groups, with some projects requiring collaboration with classmates.  See course calendar for due dates. In addition, there is a required orientation session

Late Work: 

  1. All course work must be completed by the final day 
  2. If you need additional time to complete assignments, contact  the instructor for approval before the due date to avoid a grade penalty.

Combines traditional research and Web research on the technological impact on the field of art education and on the world of art. 

Requirements: 
1.  Each response paper should be 4-8 pages, with a minimum of five sources (Web, book, journal, etc.) to support your thinking. 
2. Use Turabian Style Manual format for citations. 

Tip:
At the beginning of the course, create a preliminary file for each response paper. As you make relevant discoveries, record them in the appropriate file.

Group Curriculum Project A group effort in planning a DBAE Unit incorporating technology as a part of 1) curriculum planning and 2) the activities for students. 
30%
Participation/Discussions Ongoing dialogue to the topics covered in the papers andother issues related to technology and teaching art . 
25%
Group/Unit  Review A narrative assessment by each class member of the accomplishments of the team as a whole and of the individual member's contributions.  Also, comment on the role of the response papers, discussions, and independent reading had on shaping or broadening understanding needed for the project  the projects. List of your contributions.  5%
