Mr. Gottsegen has had 8 solo exhibits and has participated in more than 70 group exhibitions. He is the author of two books: A Manual of Painting Materials and Techniques (Harper & Row, 1987) and The Painter's Handbook (Watson-Guptill, 1993). The Painter's Handbook was revised, expanded, illustrated, and re-issued by Watson-Guptill in 2006.

Gottsegen has published a dozen articles, presented more than 30 public talks on painting materials, and is the recipient of grants for lightfastness research from the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training and the Samuel H. Kress Foundation. His latest grant, from the Kress Foundation in the amount of $50,000, is for a five-year project involving 14 museums, foundations, and other public spaces in the US and Europe.

Gottsegen has been a member of ASTM International since 1978 and the chair of its Subcommittee on Artists' Paints (ASTM D01.57) since 1988. In 2006 he became the Co-Director of the Art Materials Information and Education Network (AMIEN), a non-profit organization that is part of the Intermuseum Conservation Association in Cleveland, OH.

The 2nd edition of The Painter's Handbook, revised and expanded, has been published by Watson-Guptill Publications, 2006, revised, updated, and illustrated.
