Dr. Leal is a Mexican born artist/educator. She is a painter and sculpture who frequently explores other materials from textile to papier mâché and exhibits on an on-going basis. As an educator, she is committed to quality higher education instruction of future (K-12) art educators (undergraduate and graduate). Her doctoral degree is in Interdisciplinary Fine Arts with emphasis in Art Education, which provides a broad background in art history, art criticism, and aesthetics. Her research interests involves theories and philosophies in art and art education, action research, case-studies by artists, creative processes (from phenomenological perspectives), and current issues in art education such as multiculturalism, interdisciplinary approaches to art education, learning styles, and multiple intelligences theories.
Leal is a believer in the transformative power of art, and in her teaching, she seeks to open opportunities for others to explore such power. She engages in outreach programs for children and teachers, and community service. She is currently Art Education Program Coordinator to the UNCG Department of Art and supervises extensively student teachers in the field. Her professional involvement is local, regional (NCAEA), national (NAEA), and international (INSEA) as member of associations and presenter. She serves as NCAEA Higher Education Division Chair and NAEA Women’s Caucus Membership Officer.
