Foundations Program in Studio Art

All students who wish to pursue a studio degree enter the department as candidates for a BA degree in Studio Art. Upon completion of the foundational program, students who wish to pursue the BFA program in Art Education, New Media and Design, Painting, Photography, Printmaking and Drawing or Sculpture and Ceramics will submit a portfolio of their work and admissions to any BFA concentration is contingent upon successful review of that portfolio by a rotating committee of art department faculty.

Students enrolled in the BA Studio Art degree program may seek entrance into the BFA Studio Art degree program in the third semester of the Studio Foundation Program course sequence. Students who fail the portfolio review during the third semester can reapply in their fourth semester. Transfer students must complete the UNCG Studio Foundation Program and can only enter the program in the fall semester. Students transferring mid-year are encouraged to complete GEC requirements. Students who apply to the BFA program as second-degree students will be given the opportunity to appeal the initial portfolio review at the start of their application process.

Students who wish to remain in the BA Studio Art major may continue without a portfolio review. Requirements for the BA in Studio Art are available on a separate program sheet or in the University Bulletin. Students should begin immediately to fulfill GEC and the College of Arts and Sciences Additional Requirements.

Art Learning Community

All incoming Studio Art majors will be included in the Art Learning Community. Students will participate in a number of activities across the foundations program designed to enhance their learning experience and to create a sense of coherence in each foundational class. Students will, furthermore, be assigned to cohorts by the Office of Learning Communities, and their foundations classes will be scheduled by that office. Students will proceed through the foundations program in these cohorts and may not reschedule their ART or ARH classes without permission of the Office of Learning Communities.

General Education (GEC) Requirements

Students enrolled in the Foundations Program will be assigned to a total of 12 credit hours of classes (ART and ARH) in the first two semesters of this program. Students who wish to take 15 credit hours in these semesters may register for an additional 3 credit hours each semester.
