Internship Program

The Internship Program - FAQ

Who is eligible?

You must be accepted into the MS in Accounting Program by the time that you start your internship. Note that most interns are served starting in January. However, you need not have completed any graduate courses.

What is the timing of the internship program?

A detailed schedule is attached. In general, during the summer, we prepare for the interviewing process. Interviews with participating firms take place during the first two weeks of September. Follow-up interviews, offers and acceptances are usually complete by early October. The actual internship is served from early January through mid-March.

Is participation guaranteed?

NO. In order to participate in the internship program, you must interview and be offered an internship by one of the participating public accounting firms.

How many firms participate in the UNCG MS in Accounting Internship Program?

Last year there were 8 firms that participated directly that hired 13 students.

Can I obtain my own internship?

Yes, you can. In fact, three students last year obtained internships through their own initiative. However, before participation is accepted as a basis for academic credit, you must consult with me prior to starting the internship.

How many credit hours are involved?

This is a three credit hour course graded on a pass-fail basis.

Are there any other requirements to obtain academic credit?

Yes. You must prepare a paper summarizing your experience and participate in a closing discussion with the instructor. It is also expected that your performance as appraised by your employer will be satisfactory.

Can I take other courses during my internship?

Yes, but it is discouraged since you will probably be working at least 40 hours per week. By completing your internship by March 15, you can take electives (MBA courses) during the latter half of the semester. In addition, the MS in Accounting program offers a seminar (ACC630) which takes place over the last half of the spring semester.

Is this a paid internship?

Yes. You are compensated by the firm at a rate negotiated between you and your employer.

What do I need to do to get involved?

Make sure that you have notified the Department Internship Coordinator of your interest in having an internship. Additionally, you must attend the June orientation meeting.
