About Career Services

Leslie Nguyen

The Bryan Career Services Office, located in 231 Bryan, is a branch office of the main Career Services Center located in #1 EUC. The Bryan School encourages students to begin utilizing the resources and services provided by Career Services during their freshman year and to begin the process of career planning early in their college career.

To assist with career planning, we provide services that are designed to educate, counsel, and involve students in their career decision-making and development through providing guidance and career-related resources. In addition to preparing students for the work world, we also work with employers to provide excellent candidates for internships and part-time and full-time job opportunities.

The Career Services Center can assist in the following areas:

Drop-In Hours:

Students can stop by during Drop-In Hours for quick-help with career-related questions. These meetings typically last between 10-15 minutes. No appointments are necessary.

Drop-In Hours:

  • Bryan Branch Office: 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm, Monday - Friday
  • Main Office (#1 EUC): 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm, Monday - Friday

Etiquette DinnerAppointments:

To meet with the Bryan School Career Counselor, appointments are requested. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 336-256-0223 or 336-334-5454, or by stopping by 231 or 232 Bryan.

Mock Interviews:

Students interested in scheduling appointments for mock interviews with career counselors should plan for a one hour appointment. The mock interview is the only thing that will take place during that appointment time. Students should submit a copy of their resume to the career counselor conducting the mock interview at least 24 hours prior to the mock interview.

See Mock Interview handout.

Students needing to cancel or reschedule appointments should contact the Career Counselor they are scheduled to meet with by phone: 336-256-0223 or e-mail: ldnguyen@uncg.edu. Please remember that it is unprofessional to simply not show up for an appointment. Always remember to call and cancel, if necessary.

Critiques:

Career Fair

Students are asked to schedule an appointment to meet with a Career Counselor at least once prior to dropping off a resume/cover letter/graduate school essay to be critiqued. Students should allow 3-5 business days for documents to be critiqued. Therefore, if students need to meet a deadline for a class assignment or application, they need to plan accordingly.

Career Fairs:

Career fairs can be valuable experiences for all students, which is why all students are encouraged to attend, whether you are looking for a part-time job, an internship, or a full-time job.

A career fair can be an excellent place for a freshman to explore majors and career options. For a sophomore or a junior, a career fair can be an excellent place to begin identifying possible internship sites. For a senior, a career fair can be an excellent place to network and search for their first job after college. In all cases, career fairs provide excellent opportunities for students to practice their networking skills and gives them the opportunity to learn about various companies and career fields.

Alumni PanelOn-Campus Recruiting:

The On-Campus Recruiting Program is offered during the fall and spring semesters. This program gives recruiters the opportunity to come to campus to interview candidates for full-time job opportunities. On occasion, internship opportunities are available through the on-campus interview program. All interviews are conducted in the Career Services Center (CSC), #1 Elliott University Center.

A campus interview is usually a half-hour long and serves as a screening interview for a possible invitation to a second interview. To be eligible to participate in on-campus recruiting, UNCG graduating students and alumni (out 6 months or less) must have an ACTIVE account with SpartanCareers. Students should see a Career Counselor if they have questions about setting up a SpartanCareers account, activating their account, or on-campus recruiting.

On-Campus Recruiting

Part-Time Jobs:

Students seeking part-time employment should view the listings on SpartanCareers, as well as on the Part-Time Off-Campus Jobs web page.

Students can also meet with a Career Counselor or visit the Office of Student Employment (#1 EUC) to discuss part-time employment.

Why Participate?

The Bryan School encourages students to participate in one or more internship experiences during their college career. Students typically participate in an internship during the fall or spring semester of their junior or senior year, or during the summer between their junior and senior year. However, students today are taking part in internships even during their sophomore year. Participate in an internship:

  • To give you the opportunity to apply what you are learning in the classroom to real world experiences.
  • To gain the competitive edge. The job market continues to be competitive and internships can give you a real advantage when looking for your first job after college.
  • To gain practical work experience. Internships provide the practical work experience employer’s are looking for in today’s graduates.
  • To network with professionals in your field(s) of interest.
  • To develop and enhance the skills, abilities, knowledge, and professionalism necessary for your chosen career path.
  • To reinforce your career decision.
  • To help you identify a career you may not want to pursue.

What to Think About:

Not all internships are the same. Things to begin thinking about to find the best internship for you:

  • What is the purpose of this internship for me? What are my goals and objectives?
  • Do I want to receive academic credit for my internship?
NOTE: To receive academic credit for an internship, students must enroll in a course offered through the Bryan School. Contact your advisor for more information.
  • Do I want a paid/unpaid internship?
  • When do I want to do an internship – fall, spring, summer?
  • Where do I want to do an internship – location (city/state), company? NOTE: There are internship opportunities throughout the U.S. and abroad. You may want to consider doing an internship outside of the Triad area.
  • How many hours per week can I dedicate to an internship?
  • What do I have to offer (skills, abilities, knowledge) to an employer in an internship experience?

Thinking About Ways to Enhance Your Resume?

Join a business school related organization and build up your resume by getting involved in a group, participating in volunteer activities and taking on leadership roles. Employers tend to be impressed by well-rounded students involved in clubs and organizations. You may even have opportunities to network with professionals in your related field of study during meetings and social events.
