MISSION
The mission of the Historic Costume Collection is threefold. First and foremost, it is to support teaching for the benefit of undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty members. The costumes are used as examples of design and construction, textile design, and the social and cultural components of dress from the past. Second, it is a research tool for use by students, faculty, scholars, and the industry members interested in the study of dress in history. Third, although it is not a collection for display and/or exhibition, it is a resource used for the purposes of sharing knowledge of historic dress with members of the broader community.
FOCUS
The theme of the Historic Costume Collection at UNCG is 18th – 21th century American clothing with the focus on artifacts from the southeastern region. In addition the collection includes ethnic pieces, flat textiles, quilts, textile tools and sewing machines.
ACQUISITION GOALS
Acquisition goals include the following:
A. Clothing artifacts of high quality that are not currently represented in the collection from 1776 to present. Reproductions and disassembled garments are not acceptable.
B. The addition of American and European designer’s garments for the study of construction techniques.
