North Carolina leads the nation in textile manufacturing and ranks third in apparel production. Located in the Piedmont Triad (Greensboro, High Point, and Winston-Salem), UNCG offers Apparel Product Design, Retailing and Consumer Studies and Global Apparel and Related Industries Studies students the unique opportunity to integrate classroom work with the retail, textile, and apparel industries that fuel the local economy. Our interns have worked in firms such as VF Companies, Sara Lee, Cone Mills, Guilford Mills, Polo/Ralph Lauren, Kayser-Roth, Lucia, Belk's, Tommy Hilfiger, Walt Disney, Bloomingdale's, Talbot's, Pace Publications, Barney's, Sak's, Calvin Klein, Anna Sui, and Anne Klein.

INTERNSHIP SCHEDULE
Phase I: Pre-Preparation
Pre-preparation is completed during the first two years of course work. Students are encouraged to seek work experience in retail and apparel related companies. Students participate in the following activities:
- Interviewing industry experts
- Researching specific companies
- Taking field trips to industry sites
- Interacting with industry experts through symposia and class lectures
- Domestic and foreign study trips
Phase II: Professional Development Course
The second phase provides an opportunity for students to develop skills essential to obtaining jobs in the apparel and related retail industries. Students develop and apply leadership, managerial, and communications skills as well as define personal and career goals. They participate in an array of activities such as:
- Interacting with industry speakers
- Writing resumes and business letters
- Participating in mock interviews
- Developing job search skills
- Securing internship positions
Students must be at the junior level or above, have satisfactorily completed at least 12 hours of courses in CARS, and have a GPA of 2.2 or higher.
Phase III: Supervised Internship
The third phase provides an opportunity to synthesize and apply knowledge obtained in the classroom to on-the-job performance. To complete an on-site supervised internship students must have:
- A GPA of 2.20 or higher
- Successfully completed the professional development class
- Completed 18 hrs. of CARS coursework
Most students complete the internship in the summer between their junior and senior years and are required to:
- Complete a minimum of 50 clock hours for each credit hour received, which will total 300 hours for six credit hours
- Maintain a work schedule over at least an eight-week period, communicating regularly with the director of interns
- Submit pre-approved scheduled assignments that address the issues in the department's internship manual as they apply to policies and procedures of the business sponsoring the internship
- Act, dress, and conduct themselves as professional employees
- Submit final projects and present the result to the CARS faculty and appropriate external audiences
