Profile
Melanie Carrico is an Associate Professor in the Apparel Product Design concentration of the Department of Consumer, Apparel, and Retail Studies. Professor Carrico’s creative scholarship focuses on solving draping and patternmaking problems. Such investigations include zero-waste apparel design and bias draping without “bias” construction (Spiral dresses). The overarching idea behind the problem is how to simplify pattern shapes while maintaining wearability and aesthetic value. Emphasis is placed on the silhouette and technical merits of pattern and garment construction while the pieces are often void of surface embellishment.
Carrico’s creative works have been shown in more than 27 national and international juried and invited exhibitions. She is a regular presenter at the annual conference of the International Textiles and Apparel Association and the Association of Sewing and Design Professionals. She has served as a consultant for Charming Shoppes, Inc. on their fit initiative for their Lane Bryant and Catherine’s Stores divisions.
Professor Carrico is also studying the role of apparel in physical activity. Her current line of inquiry investigates if preschool children change their physical activity when wearing simple costume pieces during outdoor play. This is a collaborative project with faculty from HDFS and supported by an HES Interdisciplinary Seed Grant.
Professor Carrico earned her M.F.A. degree from University of North Texas in 1995. After working as a designer and pattern maker in the apparel industry, she taught at Kent State University for ten years before coming to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The subject matters she teaches include patternmaking, garment construction, drawing, and computer aided design.
