Admission Guidelines

The Department seeks to enroll 4-6 Ph.D. students each year. Ph.D. applicants should have GRE scores above 1300, a strong academic background and grades in theory, mathematical economics and econometrics courses, and recommendations that speak to their academic preparation and qualifications. Applicants should have completed at least one of the following mathematics courses with relatively strong academic success:

  1. Calculus II
  2. Mathematical Statistics
  3. Linear Algebra
  4. Calculus III
  5. Differential Equations

The following profile of the top ten M.A. students entering in the Fall of 2005 and 2006 classes provides a benchmark for external applicants:

Top 10 Fall 2005

  • Average 1340 - 1600 Range
  • Median Verbal 610
  • Median Quantitative 785

Top 10 Fall 2006

  • Average 1250 - 1530 Range
  • Median Verbal 640
  • Median Quantitative 740

Applicants to the Ph.D. program who do not meet these criteria will be invited to enter the M.A. program in Applied Economics.
