Admission Guidelines

The Department seeks to enroll 4-6 Ph.D. students each year. Ph.D. applicants should have GRE scores above 1300, a strong academic background and grades in theory, mathematical economics and econometrics courses, and recommendations that speak to their academic preparation and qualifications. Applicants should have completed at least one of the following mathematics courses with relatively strong academic success:

    Calculus II
  1. Mathematical Statistics
  2. Linear Algebra
  3. Calculus III
  4. Differential Equations

The following profile of the top ten M.A. students entering in the Fall of 2008and 2009 classes provides a benchmark for external applicants:

Top 10 Fall 2008

  Median Score 20% - 80% Range
Verbal 530 480-610
Quantitative 710 640-790

Top 10 Fall 2009

  Median Score 20% - 80% Range
Verbal 680 530-640
Quantitative 750 680-790

Applicants to the Ph.D. program who do not meet these criteria will be invited to enter the M.A. program in Applied Economics.
