Scholarships, Awards, Opportunities and Honors

Albert S. Keister Scholarships in Economics Dr. Albert S. Keister served as chairman of the Economics Department at UNCG for 32 years, and his family has established a scholarship fund in his memory. Keister scholarships are awarded in the spring to several outstanding rising seniors or juniors who are majoring in economics. The range of the award is usually $200 to $800. Students interested in being considered for the Keister Scholarships should contact the Department Head, 462 Bryan.

Omicron Delta Epsilon Omicron Delta Epsilon (ODE) is the International Honor Society in Economics with over 300 chapters. The Iota Chapter was established by UNCG in 1973. All economics students who have a 3.5 overall GPA plus a 3.5 GPA in economics (minimum 18 hours) qualify for ODE. The faculty may elect other students with strong academic credentials.

Phi Beta Kappa Candidates for a degree in economics are also eligible for election to Phi Beta Kappa on the basis of an outstanding academic record in liberal arts courses. In addition to having completed ninety hours of liberal arts courses, a student considered for election must have completed the equivalent of six hours of foreign language study at the intermediate college level (or pass a proficiency exam).

Honors in Economics Students in economics may participate in the University Honors Program (follow the "Departmental Honors" link to Economics).

Undergraduate Research Assistantships Research faculty have obtained university funding to hire talented undergraduate majors to assist in their research.

Economics Club Economics majors meet periodically during the semester to encourage majors to tutor (for pay) through the Learning Assistance Center, to receive special job market assistance through workshops supported by Career Services, to attend meetings (often with the FIRES organization) that feature speakers from the business community, and to network with other students about jobs, internships, and graduate school opportunities. All students are welcome. There are no dues.
