Bladen County native Amelia Hopkins remembers the profound impact a scholarship had on her college education at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Now the vice president of investments at Granville Capital Inc. has generously decided to return the favor. Hopkins has established an endowed scholarship in UNCG’s Bryan School of Business and Economics with a $25,000 gift to her alma mater. The first scholarship will be given in the fall of 2010 with preference given to a student studying economics. Bladen County students are encouraged to apply.
Hopkins, who now lives in Greensboro, hopes the scholarship will enrich a student’s UNCG experience, similar to what happened to her after receiving a full scholarship her senior year. “I believe I would have completed my studies eventually,” Hopkins said, “even without the financial aid. But this scholarship afforded me the opportunity to be a full-time student and enjoy much of what the university had to offer outside of the classroom.”
Hopkins, who earned a bachelor’s in 1979 and master’s degree in 1991 from UNCG, has remained active with her alma mater after graduation. She sits on the board of the UNCG Excellence Foundation, serving on the Finance Committee, and recently completed two terms on the Bryan School of Business and Economics Advisory Board. She also spearheaded the creation of the Bryan School’s Distinguished Alumni Award.
The Bryan School is the largest of UNCG’s seven professional schools with 400 graduate students and 2,200 undergraduates. It is accredited by AACSB International (the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) and is among the top 10 percent of business schools nationwide that have earned accreditation at the undergraduate and graduate levels in both business and accounting.
