Broading the Role of Women in IT
Imagine today’s world without computers. Computers and information technology have impacted every field you can imagine – business, manufacturing, health care, sports, entertainment including travel and tourism. We live in a digital world that opens new frontiers almost daily. New, exciting, IT related careers emerge such as Cyber Law, Gaming, Apparel design, Bioinformatics, etc. The Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that by 2016, five out of the top ten fastest growing jobs relate to IT (check out the FAQ page for more information). Most IT jobs require good skills in communication, problem solving, creativity, human interaction and collaboration – the kinds of skills most often attributed to women.
To increase awareness about IT education and careers among high-school girls in grades 9 to 11, UNCG, in collaboration with Guilford County Schoools, offered a free half-a-day workshop entitled, “IT is for Girls” on Saturday, May 2nd 2009. Through hands-on activities, participants learned to create animations, interactive narratives, and video games using SCRATCH software from MIT, design web pages, explore computer and internet security, and investigated fun ways to visualize data. Participants were able to take home their projects and a copy of the SCRATCH software program. During lunch, Tech Divas from our area firms and UNCG spoke about education, career paths and opportunities in IT, balancing work and personal life, and how to be successful in technology careers. The attendees and parents continued to network after lunch with our professionals and our majors who shared some of their senior projects.

- 8.30 to 8.50 am: Drop off and Check-in (Bryan Building – Room 221 lobby)
- 9 to 10.20 am: Hands-on Session 1 (Location will be provided at check-in)
- 10.30 to 11.50 am: Hands-on Session 2 (Location will be provided at check-in)
- 12 noon to 1 pm: Lunch—Panel (Elliott University Center – Cone Ballroom C)
- 1 pm to 1.45 pm: Poster session/Networking (Parents welcome to join)
- 1.45 to 2 pm: Parents to pick-up (Outside EUC)
