What to Do and SeeLocated in the heart of the Piedmont Triad and bordered by the cities of High Point to the south and Winston Salem to the west, Greensboro sits at the intersection of two major highways (I-85 and I-40). Attractions in Greensboro include many historical, cultural, and entertainment destinations and our mild climate and unique geography make Greensboro a wonderful place to live, work, and learn. With the beautiful Appalachian Mountains one hour to our west, and the stunning Atlantic beaches a two hour drive east, there is no shortage of fun and interesting activities for students at UNC Greensboro. In and Around Greensboro Guilford Courthouse National Park is the site of an important battle in the War for Independence. The International Civil Rights Center and Museum marks the birth of the "Sit In" movement, one of the most important moments of the 1960's civil rights struggle. The Carolina Theatre opened in 1927 and at the time was considered one of the premier theatres of its kind in the United States. Today it is run as a non-profit and is dedicated to showcasing the art and artists of North Carolina in its own special 1920's style. The Greensboro Natural Science Center is perfect for picnics, site seeing, and learning about the wonders of nature. It is just a short 10 minute drive from campus. The Grasshoppers, Greensboro's own minor league baseball team, plays in the newly built New Bridge Bank Park just minutes from campus. The Piedmont Environmental Center is a local organization with a focus on environmental understanding and sustainable living. It features several excellent walking trails that encircle Oak Hollow Lake. Wet and Wild Emerald Point is one of the southeast's largest water parks and is located off of I-85 less than 15 minutes from UNCG. The Piedmont Triad Farmers Market is a fantastic source of locally grown produce and open 7 days a week. The North Carolina Zoo, located less than 30 minutes from our campus, is the largest "walk-through" natural-habitat zoo in the world, the first in the United States, and one of only two state-owned zoos in the United States. The Coliseum, which regularly hosts both the Men's and Women's ACC basketball tournaments, is also a premier destination for major concerts and performances by today's hottest artists and is within walking distance of UNCG. The ACC Hall of Champions celebrates the biggest moments and brightest stars in the history of the Atlantic Coast Conference athletic league and is located in next to the Greensboro Coliseum. Around North Carolina For sports lovers Greensboro is located in the heart of ACC Basketball country with four of the schools, UNC Chapel Hill, Duke, North Carolina State, and Wake Forest located within 90 minutes of our campus. The Carolina Panthers, one of 32 teams in the National Football League, are located on 90 minutes south of Greensboro, on I-85, in Charlotte. For those who love to ski or snowboard, the Appalachian Mountains have many excellent resorts and are only an hour away making it an easy day trip for students. Do you love to ride roller coasters and eat cotton candy? Paramout's Carowinds theme park is also located in Charlotte and just a 90 minute drive south on I-85. A piece of American history and a tradition of fine crafts, especially wine making can be found at the historic Biltmore Mansion in Asheville. |
