STRATEGIC PLAN 2009-2014

The Bryan School is the professional school of business at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), a public, high research, doctoral granting university of the University of North Carolina (UNC) system. The University’s mission and strategic plan provide the context for the Bryan School’s strategic plan. Our fundamental purpose is to serve the people of North Carolina (NC), particularly those in the Piedmont Triad region of the state.

MISSION

The Bryan School’s mission is to:

  • offer high quality undergraduate, master’s, and doctoraldegree programs and executive education non-degree programs that prepare students to perform successfully as business professionals and to be engaged citizens in a global economy;
  • conduct and disseminate scholarly research that advances discipline-based and interdisciplinary knowledge, enhances the performance of organizations, informs public policy decision making, and contributes to teaching and learning;
  • provide professional external and internal services and outreach and engagement services to the regional community; and thereby,
  • support the region, state, and nation’s economic development.

Teaching is the highest priority for the UNC system. The majority of Bryan School undergraduate and master’s students come from the Piedmont Triad region and the majority of our alumni reside in our region. A large proportion of our undergraduate students are first-generation college students. The majority of our MBA students are part-time working professionals. Our specialized master’s and doctoral programs serve primarily full-time students pursuing discipline-related professional careers in either industry or academia. Our non-degree management education and professional development programs provide general executive and professional education for first-line and middle-level managers and staff professionals, located primarily in this region.

As a unit of a Carnegie classified “high research university” comprised of departments offering varying levels of academic programs, we have embraced differentiated roles for faculty. We value all forms of intellectual contributions but the emphasis of our academically qualified faculty is on producing peer reviewed and published intellectual contributions. Discipline-based published research in academic journals is most highly valued, and therefore emphasized on our campus and in the School.

Since our founding, we have enhanced organizations’ human resource capabilities, productivity, competitiveness, and ethicality by educating their employees, conducting applied research, and providing outreach and engagement programs and activities. Our educational, research,and outreach programs and activities enrich the region’s and state’s economic and social well-being. We continually update our programs and activities to better meet the economic and community mandates of the UNC Board of Governors to assist in transforming the state of North Carolina to meet the needs of the 21st Century. Beyond their teaching responsibilities in our educational programs, our faculty members share their research and professional expertise with business and community partners as well as with their peers in the academy and public policy makers at the regional and national levels. Similarly, our students share their expertise with business and community partners through course projects and internships, often times before they increase the human capital of these organizations by becoming their employees.

CORE VALUES

We are a learning community characterized by a spirit of inquiry, pursuit of continued improvement, professionalism, trust, ethical behavior, and good citizenship and are committed to the University’s values of inclusiveness, collaboration, sustainability, responsibility, and transparency.

VISION

Our vision is to enrich the lives of our students and the communities we serve.

STRATEGY

Our strategy is to be the leading provider of university-based business education serving the Piedmont Triad region. Our leadership position will be established through instructional, research, and engagement and public service programs and activities that meet national and international standards of excellence.

Our instructional programs and activities will include:

  1. undergraduate and graduate programs that are accredited by AACSB International for achieving overall high quality and are market-driven and responsive to the needs of our students and to the economic development needs of our region;
  2. undergraduate programs that incorporate global business education knowledge, skills, and perspectives and provide rich experiential learning opportunities; and
  3. specialized graduate (master’s and doctoral) programs.

Our research and scholarship programs and activities will meet the expectations associated with being a “high research university” and a business school offering graduate-level programs. Our engagement and public service programs and activities will be derived from our instructional and research programs focusing on faculty and student interactions with organizations in our region.
