Course Descriptions

ISM 601: Business Processes and Technology (1.5 hrs)
This course focuses on understanding the nature of the business process approach to organizations and the planning, establishment, and management of high performance business processes. This course also examines the selection, implementation, and management of various forms of information technology as they relate to the role of improving the performance of business processes.

ISM 602: Business Data Systems (1.5 hrs)
Database management systems form the backbone of virtually every modern corporate information system. Without a well designed and intelligently implemented database, an organization will have a difficult time remaining competitive in the marketplace. This course provides a balanced introduction to the design, implementation, and management of corporate database management systems. Effective strategies and techniques for modeling typical corporate data collection, retrieval and analysis are examined.

ISM 603: Web Design and Development (1.5 hrs)
In this course you will learn the essentials necessary for designing, creating, and maintaining a web site. You will become familiar with industry standards and practices and develop proficiency in the use of the latest development tools and techniques.

ISM 604 & 605: Business Applications Programming I & II (1.5 & 1.5 hrs)
These courses will teach you how to use Visual Basic programming to resolve business-related issues. You will learn to write, test, and debug programs and to use an editor to create and modify files. Programming concepts as they relate to planning, designing, and documenting will be covered. Emphasis is given to problem analysis and structured programming. At the completion of this series of courses you will be possess a solid understanding of programming and its application to business practices.

ISM 608: Networks and Telecommunications (1.5 hrs)
This course deals with the basic and advanced concepts in business data communications that relate to the different forms of electronic communications involving computers and telecommunications technologies used by business organizations. The course is tailored around the TCP/IP architecture and related technologies. The main topics covered are brief transmission, local area networks, local internets, enterprise internets, wide area networks, and telecommunications.

ISM 609: Distributed Systems and Architecture (1.5 hrs)
In this course you will study the challenges and related concepts of managing a computing network in modern business enterprise that is physical distributed around the globe and composed of various platforms, programming languages, and technologies.

ISM 610: Enterprise Information Systems and Data Warehousing (1.5 hrs)
During the past few years, a set of significant new concepts and tools, collectively referred to as Enterprise Information Systems, have evolved into a new technology that makes it possible to provide knowledge workers within an organization with information access needed for their decision-making activities. In this course we will evaluate the role that Enterprise Information Systems, and particularly Data Warehousing, play in gaining a competitive advantage.
 
ISM 611: Data Mining (1.5 hrs)
Data Mining is an interactive process of analyzing and exploring data to find valuable insights that can be exploited for competitive advantage. In this cutting-edge course you will gain hands-on experience with the latest tools and technologies of data mining.

ISM 623: E-Business Strategy (1.5 hrs)
This course provides the strategic essentials of what a manager needs to know in order to manage and lead an e-Commerce (EC) or e-Business (EB) initiative. An understanding of the skills, business concepts, strategic opportunities, and social issues that surround the emergence of EC/EB will be provided. The course explores security and privacy problems surrounding EC/EB and provides an understanding of the current practices and opportunities in electronic publishing, electronic shopping, electronic distribution, and electronic collaboration.

ISM 625 Information Assurance and Systems Security (1.5 hrs)
This course provides the foundations of information assurance and the basic principles of security as it relates to computer systems, database technologies, communications and networks. Controls, methods, and technologies in systems security and information assurance are examined. Managerial, organizational, and ethical issues are also discussed.

ISM 626: Information Technology Security (1.5 hrs)
In this course you will study the technical, managerial and organizational issues in systems security, including systems security models, analysis of business process and technology for systems security and information assurance.

ISM 627: Data Privacy Management (1.5 hrs)
This course provides a forum for you to study pertinent issues in data privacy and security vis-á-vis technical, theoretical, managerial, and regulatory aspects of the generation, collection, storage, processing and ultimately use of information. Topics covered in this course include the role of privacy in a digital economy, identity management and protection technologies, privacy laws and regulations pertaining to medical and financial data, and international privacy issues concerning cross border data flow.

ISM 631: Management of Information Technology Services (1.5 hrs)
This course offers you an examination of management challenges and methods for insuring quality and providing information technology services including training, system maintenance, user support, system evolution, and communications.

ISM 632: Managing of Vendor Relationships (1.5 hrs)
In this course you will cover computer technology and service-related contracts, including legal issues, product/service liability, and negotiation and management of performance standards and assessment.

ISM 651: Management of Technology and Innovation (1.5 hrs)
Technology and innovation in the competitive strategy of organizations; sources of innovations, the different dimensions of technological innovations, and the adoption and justification of innovations are the topics covered in this course.

ISM 654: Project Management (1.5 hrs)
While project management has been around for some time, it has become increasing important because of the shifting emphasis to the use of teams to accomplish prescribed tasks. This course focuses on the modern methods of defining, planning, and managing large IT and other business projects. Budgeting, communications, organizational workflow, leadership, conflict resolution and other issues that frequently occur during project’s life cycle are explored.

ISM 655: IT Consulting in a Business Environment (1.5 hrs)
The class provides a solid understanding of the consulting services industry, beginning with the sale of a consulting service engagement and ending with the management of a consulting project.

ISM 657: Knowledge Management (1.5 hrs)
This course examines the current theories and foundation of knowledge management with an emphasis on profit and not-for-profit organizations. Students are introduced to the strategies, practices, tools, and systems for managing knowledge and the latest technologies available for organizational knowledge management are explored.

ISM 658: Web Services Application Development (1.5 hrs)
This course covers the foundation and basic principles of web services application development and service-oriented computing. The integration of the business process view of an organization with the web services architecture is examined. Related technologies including SOAP, WSDL, UDDI, ebXML and web service orchestration and management issues are also discussed.

ISM 660: XML Technologies (1.5 hrs)
In this course you will learn application development using Extensible Markup Language (XML) including XML Schema, Document Type Definition, Extensible Stylesheet Language (XSLT), Document Object Model (DOM), SAX, Oracle XSQL and Oracle XML DB (XDB).
