UNCG ranked No. 34 in a global listing of universities based on appearances from 1990 through 2006. The only other North Carolina university represented was UNC-Chapel Hill at No. 37.
When looking at three major publications in the field – Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics, Journal of Real Estate Research, and Real Estate Economics – UNCG’s global ranking was No. 12. UNC-Chapel Hill was ranked No. 27.
In the same study, two professors in UNCG’s Bryan School of Business and Economics were listed among the best real estate researchers based on the frequency of their publication in the journals.
Dr. G. Donald Jud, who serves as a research fellow in the Center for Business and Economic Research, and Dr. Daniel Winkler were ranked No. 7 and No. 27, respectively, by the study’s authors. Winkler is a professor in the Department of Accounting and Finance and Jud is retired.
The paper, titled “The Internationalization of Real Estate Research,” appeared in the Vo1. 30, No. 1, 2008 edition of the Journal of Real Estate Research. The authors concluded that, while North American researchers are still the dominant source for research, the influence of international researchers and institutions is increasing. The paper was written by Kam C. Chan of Western Kentucky University, William G. Hardin III of Florida International University and Kartono Liano and Zheng Yu of Mississippi State University.
The authors looked at material published in nine publications that represent the top tier of academic real estate journals – Real Estate Economics, Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics, Journal of Real Estate Research, International Real Estate Review, Journal of Housing Economics, Journal of Regional Studies, Journal of Urban Economics, Land Economics, and Regional Science and Urban Economics – to draw their conclusions.
