Video Transcript Julie Price Massey University, New Zealand When I went to study abroad, I was hoping to, basically, stretch myself as a person. I wanted some new experiences, I wanted to get out of my comfort zone. Because after being at UNCG for three years I just felt like I needed a change. I needed to get out there and experience new people, try to make new friends, become more independent. It’s just an amazing experience all around. There is so much to learn about yourself, about another culture, how other cultures view your own…there’s so much to see, new foods to try…it’s just amazing. My classes at Massey…the professors were excellent, they were really nice and always willing to help. I took a communications class, a design class, an information systems class, which was really hard, and a marketing class. I enjoyed all of them and I learned a lot. Where I studied abroad, in Wellington, there’s not this main campus. I mean there is, but people don’t really live on campus, you live in the city, which is right by campus. And I lived in…it was basically an apartment complex. Six or seven of us lived together and shared grocery bills. We all went to school together. But it was really relaxed, nice…it was a nice atmosphere. It was five minutes from all the action, so we could walk everywhere, which was perfect. I did do a lot of traveling. I traveled with a Scottish girl at the end that I met through orientation. So, orientation is very key when you study abroad. Make sure you meet lots of people and get numbers, even though you barely know these people - that’s where I met a lot of my friends. So she and I traveled for three weeks on the North Island of New Zealand and then three weeks on the South Island and just went from hostel to hostel and if we liked a city we would stay. We saw a lot and did a lot of cool things. We were on a glacier. We saw killer whales in the wild. We went sailing with dolphins. There’s so much to experience in New Zealand – I mean you can be on a glacier and 30 minutes to an hour later you can be at the beach. It’s really small and the people are really friendly. It’s a great place to travel. I would just say, definitely study abroad. It was one of the best experiences of my life! I kind of planned it at the last minute and one of the main reasons why I did it was because my sister had done it. So I thought, oh, you know…she kind of suggested it. But I think everyone should seriously consider studying abroad. It made me a better person, it made me more open-minded, it made me more culturally intelligent, about other cultures and my own. But yeah, wonderful experience and I would suggest it for anyone. -- Study Abroad Special Thanks to Julie Price Interviewer Sara Landreth Technical Assistance Steve Moore Production & Editing Heidi Fischer Study Abroad – Schedule an Options Appointment Today!
