Total employment across the state was essentially unchanged in March. Over the past 12 months it has risen 1.9%, and it was higher in 11 of the state’s 14 metropolitan areas. Employment was lower in Burlington (-0.3%), Greensboro/High Point (-0.6%) and Rocky Mount (-1.6%). The highest employment gains were recorded in Asheville (3.8%) and Greenville (2.8%).
The unemployment rate in North Carolina was 9.2%, down 0.2 percentage points from last month and 0.2 percentage points below the level recorded 12 months ago. The unemployment rate fell this month in 11 of the state’s 14 metropolitan areas. It was higher in 2 and unchanged in 1. The highest rates of unemployment were in Rocky Mount (12.8%) and Hickory (10.3%), while the lowest rate was in Durham at 7.0%.
