Tracking the Triad Economy

The most recent recession ended in June 2009.  Since the end of the recession the Dixon Hughes Goodman Triad Business Index has risen at an annualized rate of 1.0%, reflecting the slow pace of the Triad recovery.  In comparison, the NC Business Index has risen 2.1% annually since the recovery began.

Beginning in middle of last year, the pace of the recovery in the Triad economy began to decelerate.  The DHG Triad Business Index peaked in October of last year and has fallen subsequently for the past 5 months.  In contrast, the NC Business Index has begun to accelerate since the middle of last year, more than doubling its rate of growth.  Employment in the Triad has been essentially flat since October, while employment statewide is up 1.0% and national employment 0.7%.  All this suggests that recovery in the Triad has stalled, while statewide the pace of recovery has strengthened.

¹The Triad is defined as an eight-county area that is composed of Alamance, Davie, Forsyth, Guilford, Randolph, Rockingham, Stokes, and Yadkin.
