POLICIES FOR CLIENT FUNDED PROJECTS
DEPARTMENT OF BROADCASTING AND CINEMA
UNC GREENSBORO
The Department of Broadcasting and Cinema welcomes the opportunity
to give its students the possibility to undertake film and video projects as a
service to the community. The challenge of meeting the specifications of a
client has significant educational value. On the other hand, the Department is
aware of its obligation to local film and video producers, many of whom are
graduates of the program, whose livelihood depends upon producing works for
clients; and many of whom generously provide pro bono support for worthy
community projects. To balance these factors, the Department has adopted
the following policies:
- The Department will undertake projects only if there is a compelling
educational objective for the students involved.
- If a student or students is/are to be paid for work, the payment must
be made directly from the contracting client and not through a
University account.
- Any use of Departmental equipment or facilities must be pursuant to
the educational objectives required in section 1 above and only after
priority has been given to scheduled class, faculty, or student
academic projects. The client must pay the standard rate established
by the Department for the use of equipment (including, but not
limited to, cameras, lights, tripods, editing facilities, etc.). This fee
may be waived, upon application, for other governmental agencies
(including UNCG departments and offices) and officially recognized
nonprofit organizations.
- The client must indemnify the Department and University against
responsibility for any and all legal fees, fines, levies, or any other
charges arising from the project.
- Client applicants must show a bona fide effort to have had the project
produced, for fee or pro bono, by a minimum of three production
houses, TV station production departments, or independent
producers.
- Under no circumstances will the Department provide production
support--reimbursed or unreimbursed--in the form of equipment,
supplies, facilities, space, etc., for work on speculative commercial
projects (i.e., projects designed exclusively for sale to the general
public through mainstream retail outlets). Academic credit for work
on such projects is available through internships.
The Departmental faculty must approve client-centered projects and an
agreement executed and signed by the client, involved students, and
Department Head.
