Media Studies Internship Program

Internships are highly recommended for Media Studies majors, particularly those in the Film and Video Production and News and Documentary concentrations. To register for internship credit through the Broadcasting and Cinema Department, a student must be a major and must have met Departmental prerequisites. Internships are available for from one to six credit hours. Most internships are in broadcasting and registered under BCN 492 Broadcasting Internship. In a typical semester, Media Studies majors at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro work in the Winston-Salem, Greensboro, High Point television market including, for example, news and sports at Fox 8 News, news at WFMY TV, and production ABC 45 Television, WLXI Television, and Greensboro Community Television. Others work at local radio stations, production houses, talent agencies, and advertising agencies.

Internships are available in filmmaking, registered under BCN 494 Cinema Internship, subject to the availability of local productions. In the spring of 2004, for example, several UNCG Media Studies majors worked on the locally produced and shot National Lampoon feature, The Trouble with Frank.

Internships are also available to UNCG students in the MFA in Film and Video Production through registration in BCN 696 Graduate Internship.

Internships are available in fall, spring, and summer semesters. Under special circumstances internship enrollments can be combined with other independent coursework to permit students to accept internships in other media markets such as Los Angeles, New York, and Florida.

Media Studies majors are expected to take the initiative in arranging internships. Internship opportunities reported directly to the Department are posted to all majors on the Department's e-mail listserv

For further information about posting an internship position with Broadcasting and Cinema, or about finding and registering for an internship, interested parties should contact Frank Donaldson, Director of Internships.
