Curriculum
Media Studies Major (MDST)

Degree: Bachelor of Arts
Required: 122 semester hours, to include at least 36 hours at or above the 300 course level
Criteria for Continuing in the Media Studies major:
Continuation in the Media Studies major is contingent upon the following requirements:

  1. Only grades of C or better (C- is not accepted) taken in MST courses will count toward completion of a major or minor.
  2. Adherence to all building and equipment policies and procedures, including the department shooting protocol.
  3. Professional conduct and treatment of program equipment, including prompt payment of any charges assessed for equipment damage.
  4. Compliance with all University regulations including the Academic Honor Policy. Plagiarism, submitting the same work to more than one class, falsified attendance records, etc. are grounds for dismissal from the major.
Requirements (I - III GEC AND CAR Requirements are unchanged)

IV Major Requirements

  • Minimum 42 semester hours in Media Studies (all levels).
  • Students must take the core requirements (24 semester hours) and six additional courses (18 semester hours), no more than four of which may be production courses (in italics) to complete the minimum requirements for the Media Studies Major.

Additional Courses (18 Semester hours)

  • No more than four production courses (in bold italics) may count toward the major requirements.

V Electives

Major Electives

Media Studies majors are encouraged to develop a strong minor or second major in a related area of communication (e.g. Art, Communication Studies, English, etc.), a modern foreign language, or a content area (e.g. History, Psychology, Sociology, etc.). Media Studies majors may also take practicum courses as additional major electives, such as:

  1. Practicum Courses: MST 190, 191, 195, 197, 399, 490, 491, 495, 497. Practicum registrations are for individual or group work conducted under the supervision of a teaching assistant or a faculty member.
  2. Internship Course: MST 492
  3. Honors work: MST 493
  4. Senior Portfolio: MST 499

University Electives

  • Electives sufficient to complete the 122 semester hours required for the degree.
Media Studies Minors

The Department of Media Studies supports the following two minors:

Media Studies Minor

  • Required: minimum of 18 semester hours
  • AOS Code: U859
    • Required course (3 s.h.): MST 101 or 102
    • Other courses (minimum 15 s.h.) from those listed below. Students wishing to complete the Film and Television Studies minor must be officially registered with the Department of Media Studies for permission to enroll in some of the courses listed:
      • MST 101 or 102 (if not chosen for the required course), 205, 222, 225, 226, 301, 305, 322, 323, 325, 326, 327, 335, 423, 515, 520, 521, 525, 528.

Radio Minor

  • Required: minimum of 18 semester hours
  • AOS Code: U848
    • Required course (3 s.h.): MST 101 or 102
    • Other courses (minimum 15 s.h.) from those listed below. Students wishing to complete the Radio minor must be officially registered with the Department of Media Studies for permission to enroll in some of the courses listed:
      • MST 101 or 102 (if not chosen for the required course), 190, 205, 222, 301. 305, 322, 323, 326, 341, 343, 361, 399, 468, 473, 490.
