Each BIO 105 lecture section has a theme, but all the labs are the same. So none of the lecture sections covers exactly the same material as lab. Instead the courses are complimentary. Lecture gives you the opportunity to explore a few topics in depth, while lab uses a general approach to introduce you to laboratory techniques and equipment. It is not a problem to be enrolled in "Conservation Biology" and BIO 105 L - members of your lab who are in the "Human Biology" section will be a resource when lab covers human health, while you will be the expert in the ecology section! We have been doing the course this way for years and it really works quite well.
Labs will meet as scheduled during the first week of classes.
The BIO 105 Lab Manual will be available in the University Bookstore starting the first week of classes.
BIO 105 lecture is a pre/co-requisite for BIO 105 Lab. This will be explained during the first lab period but you should be aware that this requirement will be enforced. Students who are unable to produce documentation for the requirement will be dropped from the lab during the second week of classes.
BIO 105 Lab FAQ
Q. The lab section I want is closed. Can
the Lab Coordinator add me to a closed lab?
A. No, if there are 24 students enrolled the lab room is at full
capacity. Keep trying to add the class online until the end of the first
week of classes. If you haven’t been able to add by Monday, August 27,
contact the lab coordinator.
Q. Do labs meet during the first week of
classes? What if my lecture hasn’t meet yet?
A. Labs meet as scheduled during the first week of classes, even
if your lab meets earlier in the week than your first lecture.
Q. Do I need any special materials for lab?
A. You need a simple calculator, something to write with and
a new (not used) lab manual. The lab manuals must be purchased at the University
Bookstore.
Fall 2007: Lab manuals will not be available until the first week of
classes. We will not use the lab manuals until the second lab period (during
the week of August 27).
Q. My lecture has a theme other than general
biology. Is there a special lab section I should enroll in or is it OK
to sign up for a regular lab?
A. It is fine to sign up for any BIO 105 lecture and any BIO
105 lab. The lab course is set up to be independent of lecture. We know
that not all lectures cover all the lab topics – in fact, most of the lectures
don’t cover every lab topic.
Q. Can I take the lecture without the lab?
What about lab without lecture? If I took the lecture in a previous semester
or have transfer credit for the lecture but not lab, is it OK to take just
the lab?
A. You may take lecture without the lab. The lecture is a pre-/corerequisite
for the lab; you must either enroll in lecture during the same semester
that you take the lab or have successfully completed lecture in a previous
semester. Transfer credit for BIO 105 lecture satisfies the prerequisite.
Q. Will my lab grade be averaged into my
lecture grade?
A. BIO 105 Lab is a separate, 1-credit course; you receive a
separate letter grade for lab.
Q. If I drop BIO 105 lecture do I have to
drop BIO 105 lab?
A. You can remain in BIO 105 lab if you drop the lecture. But
be sure to check your degree audit – a lab course taken without a corresponding
lecture might not fulfill the GEC lab science requirement.
