The objective of this assignment is for students 1) to learn more about real solutions to environmental problems, like the importance of volunteerism in conservation and 2) to learn more about an organization that strives to improve, restore, or protect the biotic community. Each student is required to provide 3 hours of service to the environmental organization of his or her choice. You can earn hours either on or off campus.
Getting credit:
Construct an informal document and have it signed by the supervising
person from the organization (unless you are working
for the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling (OWRR) on campus, in that
case the OWRR will notify Amy directly and the student is not responsible
for submitting anything). It should include the following:
name of the organization; your name; date work was accomplished: nature
of the work; name of the supervisor; signature of the supervisor and number
of hours worked. All work must be completed by November 14th
and documentation must be in the red folder on or before November 14th.
Exception: Students with full time jobs, young children, or special needs may write a 4 page paper (4 pages text, plus citations). Topic should relate the material of the course to your major, include citations, and be formatted according to the guidelines (see instructor for handout). Your paper must include the date you received permission from the instructor and that date must be before break. Due on or before November 14th.
Some ideas:
WANT TO CHOOSE YOUR OWN TOPIC? YOU
MUST GET IT APPROVED DURING THE FIRST MONTH OF THE SEMESTER! You
may consider working with a hometown conservation group on a weekend or
over break. Remember, the service you perform must be directed
toward the natural world. Note
the following examples: Working for Habitat
for Humanity is service for humans and does not qualify. Working
a Haunted Trail at Lake Higgins is NOT about working to improve the
environment. Working to improve habitat for wildlife does qualify.
Projects with domestic animals do NOT qualify (e.g. working at the animal
shelter); projects with wildlife or native wild plants do qualify.
1. Help the UNCG Recycling Office (OWRR). On-campus opportunities assisting with campus recycling needs: a) Hanging Installments (informational newsletters hung in dorm bathrooms). This is a good choice for students who live on campus. Once signed up, students should report to the recycling office (at the corner of Highland St. and Oakland Avenue, in the Physical Plant building beside the large smokestack) during the first week of every month. You will pick up tape and installments at the door of Room 214 Physical Plant and sign in for duty. Tape must be returned to the office or the teaching assistant in biology class before credit is awarded. Space is limited so plan to get there at the beginning of the week; b) Help garbage and recycling collectors on campus. Can happen anytime but an appointment is necessary and you will be asked to sign a release form. You will get dirty. Contact Recycling Office, 256-0442 for opportunities with the campus recycling office.
2. Backyard Wildlife Habitat. Have your backyard (or that of a friend) certified as backyard wildlife habitat. You must submit a copy of the certificate. For details visit the National Wildlife Federation web page at: http://www.nwf.org/backyard/.
4. Adopt-A-Street with Black Business Students Association. Black Business Students Association is a consistent contributor to environmental service at UNCG.
5. Adopt-A-Stream, Saturday, NOVEMBER 1st. Outdoor AdventuresFind out more by calling 334-4033 or go by their office downstairs in Campus Rec. Center. All events must be signed up for at the Outdoor Adventures Office, first floor Rec. Center. This is located on the side of the UNCG Student Rec Center across from the entrance to the HHP building. By the door you will see kayaks and a big white van. Mike Ackerman will send me a list of attendees.
6. Adopt-A-Stream, Tuesday,
Oct.7. UNCGreenwill
hold its Adopt-A-Stream clean-up on Tuesday 7 October at 5pm. Our stream
is the section that runs through campus over by the high rises and music
building. We will meet at the bridge to the music building at 5pm. The
clean up should take 1-2 hours depending on how many show up. Those who
are interested should contact Amanda (see below) ASAP so that she
can make sure we have enough supplies. For those unfamiliar with the Adopt-A-Stream
program, we will be collecting the trash in the stream and taking some
general information about the health of the stream. Make sure to wear close-toed
shoes and clothes you don't mind getting dirty. If you have waders or galoshes,
those can be helpful as well. All trash bags and gloves will be provided.
