Arpha Burrell Biology Scholarship

This scholarship fund was established by Arpha Burrell, Class of 1941, with a gift of $25,000 to the UNCG Excellence Foundation, Inc. The Burrell Scholarship will be awarded based on financial need to a full-time undergraduate student majoring in biology.

Arpha Burrell was born in Tryon, Polk County, North Carolina. She graduated as Valedictorian of Tryon High School and attended the Woman's College. One of eleven children, she was the first in her family to attend college. Following graduation, she worked for five years teaching physical education and biology at Lowell High School in Lowell, NC. In 1946, she moved to Rutherfordton, NC and taught biology at RS Central High School for almost 30 years before retiring in 1975.

In endowing this scholarship, Ms. Burrell expressed appreciation for the education she received and her desire to help deserving students with financial need complete their education at UNCG.

The Arpha Burrell Scholarship will be administered as an endowed fund; additional gifts may be added to the fund at any time by any interested party. Scholarship recipients will be chosen by the Biology Department Head based on the recommendation of senior faculty and in consultation with the Financial Aid Office.
