Graduate Studies in Biology at UNCGCurrent program literature and web resources are under revision by the Graduate Committee. For further information please see the UNCG Graduate Bulletin or email the graduate program at biograd@uncg.edu.Faculty in the Department of Biology are committed to providing advanced training in the biological sciences that ensures entry of our graduate students into a rewarding life science career. Our faculty and students work in an atmosphere that encourages extensive interdisciplinary exchange of ideas and technology, the cornerstone of innovative and purposeful research. The Department of Biology offers a PhD program in Environmental Health Science (EHS) and a more general master's of science (MS) degree in biology. Both the PhD and MS degrees are research-intensive programs that lead to a dissertation and thesis, respectively. Graduate students work closely with faculty research mentors to design and carry out original research. Graduate Programs in BiologyPhD in Environmental Health Science In the fall 2010 semester, we initiated our new PhD program in Environmental Health Science (EHS). The PhD in Environmental Health Science (EHS) prepares students for senior-level positions in professions related to environmental health science in its broadest sense. The program trains students to become leaders in biological research relevant to environmental issues that directly and/or indirectly affect human health, and the program trains students to convey information effectively to the public. Students acquire an understanding of the multidisciplinary nature of environmental health issues from ecosystem to molecular levels. Students learn relevant research skills and conduct research under the guidance of one or more faculty members in the department. The PhD degree program requires a minimum of 55 hours beyond the Baccalaureate degree. Students complete independent research under the guidance of a faculty advisor in a range of EHS related fields, leading to a dissertation. EHS application deadline for 2013-2014 - February 15th, 2013 MS in Biology The Department of Biology offers a research-focused MS program in a wide-range of areas within the biological sciences. MS students take formal courses and then work closely with individual faculty on a research project leading to a thesis. The program generally takes two years to complete. MS application deadline for 2013-2014 - March 30th, 2013 |
