The Department of Biology at UNCG is committed to providing excellent and comprehensive instruction at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and the Department’s excellence in education is complemented by highly active research programs in environmental and behavioral ecology, evolution, population biology, and cell and developmental biology. The Biology Department Spring 2012 Commencement will be on Thursday, May 3rd at 10:30 AM in Aycock Auditorium, on the UNCG campus. Students that have applied to graduate this May will be notified closer to the date of commencement. UNCG Biology Undergraduate, Tristan Munchel's, review of Seminar featured in The Carolinian
Tristan Munchel wrote a review of last week's, January 25th, 2012, seminar from Dr. James Costa for the UNCG student newspaper, The Carolinian. Dr. Costa is from the biology department at Western Carolina University and his talk was titled -- Darwinian revelation: A primer to Charles Darwin's one long argument. |

This lecture explores the diverse properties of the chemical elements through the use of historical accounts and demonstrations of chemical reactions. |

Research Experience for Undergraduates Program in Estuarine and Coastal Marine Sciences
The National Science Foundation funded REU program will take place at the Duke Marine Lab located on Pivers Island in coastal Carteret County of North Carolina. Eight students will participate in a 10-week semi-independent research program with faculty mentors in the following general areas: sensory physiology, ecology, and behavior, environmental toxicology, molecular biology and genetics, coastal and estuarine processes. Each student will work with a faculty mentor, develop a research project, present progress and final oral reports and prepare a final written paper. Students will receive housing and meals at the Duke Marine Lab in addition to a stipend and travel allowance. The application deadline is February 15, 2012.
