Research published by recent UNCG M.S. grad Jackie Metheny, a student of Dr. Matina Kalcounis-Rüppell, has been highlighted with a dispatch in Current Biology. This study combined field work and genetic analyses of tree-roosting big brown bats and showed that for daily decisions of who to roost with, bats don't necessarily choose relatives. However, when it comes time to start a new colony in a new set of roost trees, bats move with relatives.
